About Richmond SPCA

About Our Shelter...

The Richmond SPCA, founded in 1891, is a non-profit, no-kill humane organization dedicated to the principle that every life is precious. As a national leader in humane care and education, the Richmond SPCA is aggressively tackling the problem of pet overpopulation through education, adoption, rehabilitation and spay/neuter. The organization saves the lives of more than 4,000 homeless animals each year and cares for approximately 350 cats and dogs daily.

The Richmond SPCA is not affiliated with any other private animal welfare organization or SPCA but has relationships with Richmond City Animal Control, Hanover County Animal Control, and Goochland County Animal Control, whereby we transfer animals from the municipal shelter to our own Robins-Starr Humane Center to be placed for adoption.

Our Adoption Process...

For current adoption fees, discounts and specials, click here.

A $20 deposit is required for holds placed on pets. If the hold results in an adoption, the deposit is applied to the adoption fee, otherwise, the deposit is non-refundable and treated as a donation. A 24-hour hold can be placed on adult pets to allow for pet-to-pet introductions or to allow another household member to meet the pet.
