Hi Guys...Gertie's my name and I was taken out of a bad situation by another shelter. Then that shelter had to close and needed to find a place for me. Thankfully the VHS said I could come here. And that was a really good thing because the VHS tests all incoming dogs for heart worms and I tested positive. But don't worry, the VHS will provide my treatment at no charge to my adopter and walk you step by step through the process. And it sure would be nice to receive this treatment in my new home. Due to the circumstances of my arrival, VHS doesn't have any back ground information on me. But they do know that I'm keeping my kennel here spotless and that's a very good sign that I'm potty trained. And believe me, the nights are pretty long here from about 3 PM to 8 AM. They also know that I'm VERY active and VERY Social, and I've lived with other dogs in the past. I did really well on my temperament evaluation and was tolerant of handling. I also LOVE stuffies! And I'm food motivated which should help when you're teaching me things. And No Cats for me please. My life was kind of rough before coming here and I sure would appreciate receiving some regular TLC, taking walks together and sharing the living room with my very own person.
My adoption fee includes my spay/neuter, up to date immunizations, nationally recognized microchip and more.

About Vanderburgh Humane Society

About Our Shelter...

The Vanderburgh Humane Society, Inc. (VHS), a tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1957 to provide protection for homeless animals, intervention for animals in abusive environments, and community education to encourage prevention of animal abuse and pet overpopulation. The VHS receives no tax-based funding whatsoever. Therefore, it depends on the generosity of the corporate community and the public at large to continue, and hopefully expand, the much needed services it offers.

Located in Evansville, Indiana, the VHS serves as a surrender and adoption agency for unwanted pets. In addition to finding homes for animals, the VHS also works to build public awareness of the problem of homeless and abandoned pets. Through special events, media coverage and other outreach activities we hope to reduce the flow of animals to our shelter.

Our mission:
Leading our community to eliminate pet overpopulation through Spay/Neuter, Adoption, and Humane Education. Alter. Adopt. Adore.

We also offer a Safe Pets Program, which provides a safe haven to pets of local families who are victims of domestic violence, working with a local shelter, and have no place for their pets to go in a dangerous situation.

Our Pit Stop Program provides funding for any resident of Vanderburgh County to get their pit bull-type dog spayed or neutered at no cost. Only a $10 rabies shot is required if the pet is not current.

We provide bi-weekly Emergency Pet Food Assistance to local families having a rough time providing for their pets.

Our Pet-Assisted Therapy program brings volunteers to local nursing homes and assisted living centers with gentle-tempered dogs who are up for adoption.

Come Meet Our Pets...
