My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

For more information and adoption applications please consult our website at www.pounddog.ca.

Let me introduce you to Cole, an approximately 4 year old Lab/Border Collie mix. He is a smart large size dog with a mature gentle personality. Cole is extremely easy going and likes everyone he meets.

Cole was picked up by a rural animal control facility. He now has the opportunity to find his forever family. Cole deserves a family who is as devoted to him as he will be to them. He needs to belong in a home where he will not be allowed to roam free and be safe, and where he can be confident in that fact that he is home forever and will never be lost or abandoned again. Cole would do well in a mildly active home. He is great in the car. Cole has shown himself to be protective of his foster home and he will sound a well thought out alarm when he feels there is a threat. But anyone visiting is greeted warmly.

Cole has a lot of extra weight on his frame and it shows with his mobility. He is currently about 80lbs and ideally should lose around 15lbs to be at a fit weight. His foster family has him on a strict diet and is slowly increasing the amount of exercise that Cole gets in order not to put too much stress on his joints. His foster family has seen a noticeable improvement in Cole’s mobility in the short time that he has been with them. They expect for this improvement to continue as the weight comes of and Cole gets more and more exercise. His adoptive family will have to ensure that he is kept on a reducing diet and treats are limited. He also needs daily exercise to work on his fitness.

Cole is a less active dog probably because of the excess weight but he loves to go for walks and gets very excited when it’s time to go and shows his excitement by whining until his leash is on and he is on his way out the door.. He does well with at least two 30 min walks a day no matter what the weather.

Cole is completely house trained and will give you a sign that he needs to go out. He has never made an accident in his foster home. He is also past the puppy chewing stage and is not really interested in dog toys. Cole is not crate trained and sleeps on a dog bed at night and when alone in the house. Crate training was not attempted with Cole as he showed right from the beginning that he really did not need one. We are still in disbelief that such a beautiful and lovable dog was abandoned. Cole is good with other dogs and has settled in nicely with his foster sister and brother. Cole would do well in a home with another friendly, well behaved dog, but this is not a necessity for him. Cole would do just as well being the only dog and getting all the attention to himself. He will need a family willing to devote the time to make sure that he continues to work on his mobility and diet.

Cole is also good with his two foster cats and does not bother with them at all. Cole is not being fostered in a home with children and we believe that with his gentle nature, He would do fine with older children (over 8yrs) that have been educated on how to treat dogs. Cole has been taught basic obedience and knows "sit: and “give paw”. He is extremely food motivated. Cole's new family should commit to continuing his obedience training to bring out the best in this very smart dog. In the end you will have a fantastic dog that has all the love in the world to give.

Cole loves to be outside and will stay outside for hours just hanging around. He is very independent and likes to be near but does not stick to you like glue. He also loves people and really enjoys a good brushing and head scratch. He is also not a barker and is usually very quiet. He is also very good on a leash most of the time.

Dogs are very cute and hard to resist but they do require a lot of time commitment and are not for everyone. Cole’s rough start has not held his back from loving life and being a happy, affectionate boy. He is looking for a forever home to share his life with. If you are looking for a dog that is mature, independent, smart and highly trainable, Cole may just be the perfect one for you!
