Harley is a three-year old, white and tan Pit Bull terrier or Pit Bull Terrier mix. Weighing about 55 lbs., he is mostly tan with some white markings throughout his coat. He was originally found roaming for days around Chino Prison for Men. He had several cuts and scrapes, really dirty, pretty skinny, but amazingly enough, he was so approachable, everyone knew, all he needs is a good home.
Harley is a very good-natured dog that just wants to be loved. He is more than happy to sit, sleep, or just lay by your side. Although, sometimes he thinks he is a lap dog, but we just tell him to lay down and he gets comfortable as close as he can to you. As long as he knows you are there, he can fall asleep peacefully. He loves to lick your face. He loves to go out for walks. He also likes to play ball, but sometimes does not return it. He also likes to explore. He has gone to the mountains with as many as 5 other dogs, all sizes, and he just loves to play and jump around in the dirt.
Harley is a sensitive dog, and he is also very expressive with his feelings. When he is comfortable, his ears flop up and he gives a big grin, tail wagging loosely. You can tell if he is uncomfortable with new situations, but he mostly walks away if he is not familiar with new people or surroundings. Once he feels more secure, he will come back to greet you.
Harley has a foster sister that is a big puppy, almost his size and pretty hyper so she is constantly jumping all over him, under him, and licking and nipping at his face. He does not budge ever. He just laughs and wags his tail as she climbs all over him, but he is very gentle with her.
Harley goes out for at least a mile walk every day. He also lets people pet him as we go out for walks, and if we stand talking for too long, he will snuggle into them just to get some more petting. While Harley needs love, the exposure to various dogs, settings (he was boarded at a facility for a few weeks while I went on vacation), and activities has been very positive for him. Continued exposure, love and security will keep building his confidence.
When we first found him, he knew basic commands like sit, stay, shake, and was able to walk on a leash. Harley is now crate-trained. He is fed in his crate. He also sleeps in the crate at night, but stays in an indoor patio room by day with the door open when folks are not at home. He knows to go potty outside. It is rare for him to bark unless he hears strangers coming. If he encounters a new person, he will bark, and back up or go back to his crate until he feels comfortable. Once he is confident the stranger is not a threat, he will come back out to greet him or her. He is fine with small dogs. He also likes treats with meat in them.
Harley responds well to correction and learns quickly. If he does something he is not supposed to, I just give him a firm NO and he hunches down quickly, but rarely repeats the same behavior when corrected.
Harley is wonderful in the car. He will sit in the front seat next to you and enjoy the car ride. He also walks well on the leash. Harley is not a barker, digger, and is not destructive in the house. His attention is really just focused on you. He wants to be near you and is perfectly fine just to be in the same room as you.
The home we seek for Harley is a home with another welcoming dog (any size) that will enjoy being a friend and role model to Harley, as well as people who are not collectively gone for long, extended hours on a daily basis. We may consider a home where he is the only dog depending on the circumstances.
Harley is neutered, fully vaccinated (including rabies), front-lined, and dewormed. If you are interested in Harley, please contact Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com. The phone number to the rescue is: 626-340-9316. There is no need to phone the rescue until you have first submitted an interest via e-mail.
