Baxter and a number of other cats were living at a home where the tenants needed to move out when the house was being sold; they had helped assorted cats over the years but could not take them with them when they left. The real estate agent knew of The Rescue House and asked if we could help the bunch.

Baxter is a very social cat who LOVES the company of other cats; he will go right up to introduce himself and give the unsuspecting cat his life story. Then if he’s permitted, Baxter will follow them around, curl up with, groom, and just hang with his new buddy or buddies. He yearns for that connection and is happiest when he has a feline friend. When it comes to playtime, Baxter will chase, jump, and use his signature move of rolling over in submission to his prey only to bat them around in full feline mode. With people, Baxter is less certain about how things should work—he knows and appreciates human love yet doesn’t always understand it and interactions do need to be on his schedule. Baxter will seek you out for head and chin rubs and when the time is right will allow you to pet him so long as he doesn’t feel trapped by it. He needs a very patient person who understands that while the indications are there that Baxter will be a sweet addition to the household, he may never completely bridge that gap of uncertainty and will need to be accepted for who he is: a cat’s cat.

Baxter must have the company of other cats in his home; we don’t know his thoughts on dogs, though feel an adult-only home would suit him best.

Baxter, while healthy, tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FIV is a type of "slow virus" that affects the cat’s immune system. FIV is a cat-only virus and cannot be passed in casual contact between cats. Cats with FIV often live long and perfectly normal symptom-free lives. Note that identical FIV positive test results occur for cats who are vaccinated for FIV as for cats with the virus. A good article about FIV can be found at

Baxter is a sweet boy who needs some understanding and interaction with his own kind to really flourish, yet he has the makings of a cat who can bring so much joy and fun to his potential adopters... will you be the caring person who takes him home?
