Hi, My name is Baz! I'm a very young 8 years of age. Don't let the number fool you, I'm not old! My life hasn't always been and easy one but it's my life and I don't dwell on the hardships. In June 2016 I lost and eye due to a tumor and now my vision isn't so great but I'm a trooper! I arrived here about 2 months ago and man I was scared! Lots of people, shiny and slick floors, and a giant set of stairs(which I now fly up and down, brave huh?) My two handlers taught me that it was all okay and I've learned to trust and love them. Now, I'm walking with my head held high, eating lots of yummy treats, and even have my very first best friend, a beautiful bulldog named Happy. Check her out, she's amazing and we have great play sessions. Before I forget, I'm being trained and already know Sit, Down, Wait, Touch, and Pout<--that gets my handlers every time! If I'm your kind of guy I'd sure love a family to call my own, so adopt me! Trust me, you're sure to fall in love.

<3 Baz

I'm a super sweet and cuddly hound boy. I'm about 36 lbs and I have lots of love to give! I love other dogs and I'd probably be fine with cats. I am pretty gentle and would do well with kids too! I really like to go on adventures and walks or hikes. I had to have my right eye removed so I am a one-eyed boy. That doesn't slow me down too much! I'm working on my training now and so far, I've been learning pretty quickly! Why don't you come meet me so I can show-off!!

Baz is receiving obedience training at a Virginia correctional center. About FETCH a Cure's Pixie's Pen Pals

About Our Rescue Group...

Through a partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections, inmates at Virginia correctional centers - Buckingham Correctional Center, Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, and Lunenberg Correctional Center – train and socialize rescue dogs with the guidance and instruction from two professional dog trainers. The Pen Pals program not only lowers the rate of euthanasia in Virginia’s city dog shelters, but also provides life skills to inmates. Our rescue dogs chosen for the program come from Richmond Animal Care and Control, Richmond Animal Leage, and the Southside SCPA. On average, 50-60 dogs are rescued and placed into loving homes every year through Pen Pals!

The Pen Pals program promotes inmate rehabilitation while increasing positive communication and interaction between correctional center staff and the rest of the inmate population. Inmate handlers learn viable job skills and some have gone on to become professional dog trainers following their release. By working cooperatively to help the animals, the inmates learn responsibility, patience, and emotional confidence among many other character building qualities that improve and enhance external relationships. These skills and attributes are acquired while training a dog that may not have had a chance for a happy life. Every time a dog leaves the program to go its new home, the inmate handler feels a sense of accomplishment and pride that they have given back to their community in a positive manner, leaving a smile on both ends of the leash!

Come Meet Our Pets...

If you are interested in meeting and/or adopting a Pen Pals dog, we can coordinate a site-visit to the correctional facility where the dog is currently residing. A liaison there will meet with you and introduce you to the dog to see if you would be a good match. We can't wait to help you find the perfect canine family member!

Our Adoption Process...

We require an application to be filled out, which can be found at

Pixie's Pen Pals requires reference checks, which may include your landlord and current veterinarian, and a home visit to ensure your new canine companion is going to a safe and healthy home.
