This cat has tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). FIV is a virus that can eventually lead to a state of immune deficiency, hindering the affected cat''s ability to protect himself/herself from other infections. Because cats with FIV have weakened immune systems, secondary infections from bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi present in the environment can cause severe illness in these cats.

FIV is primarily transmitted through bite wounds. Because FIV can be transmitted to other cats, Burlington Animal Services recommends that adopters of cats with FIV either do not have other cats in their homes or else only have cats who have also tested positive for FIV.

With appropriate care, cats with FIV can remain in apparent good health for months or years. Cats with FIV should be confined indoors in order to reduce their exposure to infectious agents and to prevent the spread of FIV. Cats with FIV should be closely monitored by their owners for any changes in their health or behavior, and wellness visits with a veterinarian should be scheduled for these cats at least every six months.

**TAKE NOTE: Cats that have been vaccinated for FIV will also come up positive on in-house testing. Please speak with your veterinarian about confirmatory testing to verify this pet''s disease status.**

All medical expenses for the treatment and care of cats with FIV are the responsibility of the adopter. Supportive care for cats with FIV may be expensive and/or extensive, and Burlington Animal Services is not able to reimburse adopters for veterinary expenses.

Burlington Animal Services recommends that any person adopting a cat with FIV immediately schedule an appointment with a veterinarian to discuss care for the affected animal.

Act quickly to adopt LAFAYETTE. Pets at this Shelter may be held for only a short time.
