Meet Winky!

Winky is a senior male beagle, about 8 or 9 years old.  You'll notice that his eyes look funny, and that's because he has scratched corneas.  Since these photos have been taken, his eyes have cleared up a bit (they are no longer red) after two trips to a veterinary eye specialist in Richmond.

Winky is GREAT with people and other dogs.  He is probably the least loyal dog ever because he believes that every human is his best friend.  He hasn't been tested with cats (yet), but we can't imagine this gentle soul doesn't get along with them.

Cumberland County Animal Control does not charge an adoption fee or a rescue pull fee. Adopters who reside in Cumberland or one of the neighboring counties (Powhatan, Amelia, Prince Edward, Buckingham, Fluvanna, and Goochland) must have the pet sterilized within 30 days of adoption. This is state law. Adopters outside of the area must arrange to have this done prior to the pet leaving the county. (We use Cumberland Animal Hospital.) The shelter is located at 11 Range Road, Cumberland, VA 23040. The shelter's phone number is (804) 492-3076.Adoption hours are every SATURDAY from 9AM - 12PM or by appointment. The County only has two Animal Control Officers, and they are out in the field sometimes.

About Friends of Cumberland County Animal Control

About Our Shelter...

Friends of Cumberland County Animal Control serves as a liaison between the county's public animal shelter (aka "pound") and the public. We network homeless pets in the shelter to facilitate adoption and transfer to rescues. We attend adoption events, and we spay and neuter as many shelter pets as possible prior to adoption.

We started this group in January 2014. The euthanasia rate went from 54% in 2013 to 19% in 2014. We have taken two dogs and five kittens into foster in 2015 to avoid their euthanasia. FOCCAC is continuing to grow itself, and our networking the animals of Cumberland County Animal Control is saving lives.

Come Meet Our Pets...

The shelter is located at 11 Range Road, Cumberland, Virginia, 23040. The hours of operation are Monday - Friday (except legal holidays) from 8:00am - 4:30pm. The two Animal Control Officers are more than happy to meet outside those hours to facilitate adoption and rescue. You just have to ask.

Our Adoption Process...

Cumberland County Animal Control does not charge a fee of any kind. The only requirements of the adopter are that they certify that they have never been convicted of animal cruelty and that they sterilize the pet within 30 days of adoption.

Friends of Cumberland County Animal Control does have an adoption process, complete with veterinary checks and personal reference checks and a $75 adoption fee.
