Hi, I'm Cooper!

Here is his latest update-

Happy Holidays, Everyone!!!
Cooper here again... just wanted to pass you an update. Apparently, because I'm such a good boy I'm getting TONS of cool presents for Christmas - and hopefully my forever family! I spent Christmas in Kansas with my Foster Mom's family and their 2 little boys 4 and 6. They loved me and I loved them! My Foster Mom was so happy about that, I even let the little one kiss and hug all the time.

Since we last chatted I have made some superduper progress! I now know to only go potty outside, that mom's socks are NOT for chewing, that I shouldn't jump on the door, and I have to be nice to the kitties. I even figured out how to play nice with the girls and they let me in their club! We have a blast!

I'm am SO loving snuggling by the fire - I don't like the cold weather! I fell asleep on mom the other day and she says I was snoring! And, the best news of all - the doctor said I can eat whatever I want so long as I take one pill per day. I'm so excited to know I'm gonna have a nice long life with my forever family. Yay!!!!

Any questions email Leslie at

Thank you

Don't you wanna be my friend?! Everybody wants to be my friend! At least that's what I think, so I make sure to greet you with lots of hugs and kisses. Foster mom says I shouldn't, and I'm working on that, but I'm just SO excited to have FRIENDS! I'm not as excited about my foster sisters, the pup or kitty kind, but I tolerate them and sometimes I like to play, too. I just really prefer to be with my human. I LOVE laying on the couch and especially the bed. Wiggling around on my back feels amazing - see, I have a slight injury on my back that makes my nerves really sensitive, so it just feels awesome to roll around for a minute. Sometimes I have a hard time getting up on the bed, especially in the morning...the doctor says that's because I have a little bit of arthritis in my hips. I'm an old guy, what can I say? Besides my back and hips, I do have some slight issues with my kidneys and some allergies, but my foster family takes good care of me so it doesn't bother me much anymore. Mom always makes sure I have lots of water and I get special food from the doctor, and two happy pills every day! (I think Mom is lying...I know one is for my kidneys and the other for my itchies...) The doctor says that with this routine I'm gonna be a healthy boy for a long time - yippee! I'm super happy about that because, for the first time that I can remember, I've been able to start really living life! I get car rides, we go get ice cream together, I get to go on walks in the woods! This one time, I almost pulled mom now we walk around the driveway and stop a lot. I'm really getting the hang of it - the treats sure help! When we're not doing that, I get to hang out in the backyard. It's a shame I can't get out off it - I'd really love to go on an adventure by myself! But for now I'll just stay back there - I have to keep the family safe. I make sure I bark at everything that I even THINK may be bad. When I'm done outside and want to go inside, I just jump up on the door an open it myself...sweet, right? I thought so, but not mom! Now she makes me sit at the door and boring! Anyhow, once I'm inside I usually just hang out with mom or take a nap on the couch. I wish I could sleep with her too, but she says I have to be in my crate at night. I do NOT like going in that thing, but I know the rules...go to sleep, so that's what I do. I don't mind it at all during the day, though! So long as you come home and let me out and give me lots of love, I'll be a happy guy forever! Thanks for reading, friend!

A note from Cooper's foster Mama!

Meet Cooper! This sweet charmer is nothing but love! He's a bit of an older gent - around 9 or 10 - but you would never know it! He's a super smart guy - probably too smart sometimes - and he's a bit defiant, so he'll definitely need a strong Alpha to lead him. He will also need a home and fence that is secure - his smarts get him out, but not back in - and he is a bolter with no recall. We are currently working on his house and door manners, which he has made significant progress in (he knows how to open doors with lever handles...)! He gets along fine with dogs and cats though he's VERY curious about cats and may scare them initially. His play style can be somewhat aggressive - with cats and dogs - which lands him in a little bit of trouble sometimes. If he's with another animal he would need to be supervised until they have established their boundaries. He's quite the leash puller but is working really hard (and doing well) on his leash training. However, once he's locked on to something, he's on. Obedience training with Mr. Cooper will be essential.

Because of his background, ( he was part of the Indiana 11)  Cooper really never learned proper house skills, including potty skills. He's pretty good now, but he does still occasionally mark. He also has a love affair with some pieces of clothing - mostly socks, but sometimes other things like sweaters - that he enjoys shredding, and he's quick as lightning. Mr. Cooper, unfortunately, also seems to have experienced some abuse in his past. He will cower if you raise your hand; however, he responds very well to a stern voice followed by love/positive reinforcement. That's the key to this guy - love, love and more love. And some patience :)  If you have those things, he will give you that love back ten-fold. And lots of laughs!

Cooper is on a prescription KD diet and one medication per day for his kidneys, which he will require for the rest of his days. He seems to have a slight food or seasonal allergy that causes him to be a little itchy sometimes that cannot be overcome by switching foods. Benadryl really helps to control the itch, so he gets that as needed. He does require a lot of water, which means more potty breaks; though while he's in his crate he's a good boy - no accidents at all. He will require continued vet monitoring of his kidneys for the rest of his life.

Overall, Cooper is a GREAT guy! He is so snuggly - I'm pretty sure he would crawl inside of you to get closer if he could. He is a little challenging at times, but that's part of what makes him so special. Even in correcting his behavior, all he needs is love - how sweet is that?!

Cooper’s adoption is being handled through National Brittany Rescue and Adoption Network. The adoption fee is $200.00. Please go to and fill out the adoption application.  The Coordinator for Virginia is Leslie Trenta and she will be handling all inquiries and applications for Cooper. Leslie can be reached @

If you are interested in Cooper, please go to and complete an online application. The Coordinator in your state will contact you to explain the process. NBRAN will require a home visit and vet check.
