Hallooooo!  My name is Peony, it's Peony, yes, but you can call me anything you like, honey,  as long as you don't call me late for dinner!  The only thing I like to do more than eat is talk, and here I mean chatter, blather, meow, mew, meow, you get the picture.  I am very communiCATive!  So where were we, ah yes, eat, talk and CUDDLE!  I adore the pettings, the strokings - oh any kind of attention - I love the lovin!  And as you can see from my pictures, I have no problem being as silly as possible to get your attention.  I even shaved off half of my mustache just for giggles.  I promise to keep you entertained.  I am just 4 years old with a petite and willowy figure (as we Oriental Shorthairs typically have).  I'm spayed and up to date on all the vet stuff.  Now, enough about me (...did I really just say that?) - I want to hear all about you - my new family.  So come on down and meet me, take me home, and oh my stars, we'll have a fabulous life together!

About Our Rescue Group...

BARKS (Byram Animal Rescue Kindness Squad) is a non-profit, all volunteer, animal rescue organization founded in 1973 to provide veterinary care, housing and permanent placement of stray and abandoned cats and dogs.

BARKS works in association with the Byram Pound located on Mansfield Drive in Byram Township, N.J. In addition to the pets that can be seen at the Byram Pound, we also have many cats in foster homes and several dogs in local kennels. These pets can be seen by appointment and at our regularly scheduled adoption days.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Adoption days are held 2 Saturdays per month from
11-3 at various locations in Sussex and Morris Counties. See website for updated adoption day locations.
Animals can also be seen by appointment by contacting 973-300-3185 or

Our Adoption Process...

Our Adoption Policy
BARKS has many wonderful pets available for adoption. All our pets are spayed and neutered and have a current rabies and distemper vaccine. In addition, all cats are tested for feline aids and feline leukemia and all dogs are heartworm tested.
BARKS prohibits the declawing of our cats but check our website for cats found already declawed. They are identified by a black pawprint on the petfinder listing.

Our screening and adoption process:
Our screening process consists of a written application, including a veterinary reference where applicable, and a personal interview. At our discretion, a visit to the prospective home may be required.

All pets are accepted for return if the pet is not adjusting well at the home. We encourage adoptive homes to make this decision within 30 days but will accept the pet back at any later date with reasonable advance notice.

We request an adoption donation per pet.
Adoption fees:
The adoption fee is $150.00 for dogs.
For cats, there is a discount for adopting two cats at the same time:
Kittens 0-8 months: $120 ($195 for 2)
Adults 8 months - 7 yrs: $95 ($160 for 2)
Seniors 7+ yrs: $50 ($75 for 2)
(fee for adopting multiple cats/mixed ages will be determined on a case by case basis)
