'Rojo is a wonderful 9 month old red heeler mix. She was rescued from a kill shelter in San Antonio, and driven her back to California in late June of this year. She is quick as a whip - super smart, eager to please and loving.

Smart: ease to potty train, and learned her basic commands fast( sit, stay, come, let’s go, tap) . She knows “in your bed” for her crate.  Rojo has learned to open the back door to let herself out for her business!

Though she can very shy, and can be weary of strangers -- she is incredibly loving  and loyal to 'her people”, and is one of the most affectionate heelers we’ve known.  Needs a little time to get to know you.

Her energy level is good, but on the lower side for a Aussie Cattle Dog her age. Though she is playful, she spends a good deal of the day napping. When left alone uncrated for short periods of up to 3 hours, she displays no unusual or undesirable behavior (though she does appreciate a good chew toy/antler).

She does display consistent fear of other dogs as well as aggressive resource guarding around food, and toys. She has been working with a trainer on her social fears, and is able to tolerate other dogs at a distance of 20 feet, It is recommended Rojo be placed in a single dog household.

Rojo has very little experience with other pets, and with children.

Rojo has displayed inconsistencies with her fear of people. She is often (but not always) fearful of strangers, and displays the greatest fear toward large bearded men, and women with loud pitchy voices. That being said, she does really well with after she feel safe around a new person - this often takes two calm and treat oriented visits for her to loose her inhibitions.

It is assumed this pup had a difficult first 3 months as a stray on the streets of San Antonio, and displays fear reactions in over stimulating environments, She has been working with a trainer on integrating her into city life. She takes regular walks in safe areas to work on her fear of the unknown, and it seems she is making progress.

That being said, we believe she will do much better in a less stressful/stimulating environment. She would also need to be placed in a household that is familiar with the cattle dog breed.

Rojo has been spayed and is current on all of her medical needs.

We are happy to arrange transportation for perspective adopters.

Questions are welcome, We are willing to offer any information needed by prospective adopters to help ensure she has a happy, loving, and safe forever home.'

About Whiskers, Tails and Ferals

About Our Rescue Group...

Whiskers, Tails and Ferals is a network of volunteers and foster families caring for dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens who have been abandoned, are feral, or are facing the threat of being euthanized at an animal shelter.
All dogs and cats that come into our program are spayed or neutered, are tested for either heartworm or FeLV and possibly FIV, vaccinated, wormed (as needed) and micro-chipped.
All sick animals are immediately put under the care and supervision of a Napa veterinarian and Whiskers, Tails and Ferals pays for their medications.
The cats and kittens that are not able to be tamed, are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and returned to their colonies where colony guardians continue to feed and care for them.
