Momma Cat's story isn't one that simply highlights a beautiful face; this is a story of survival, determination, and maternal love. During the summer, Momma Cat - at some point having been abandoned and left to fend for herself - took refuge in the yard of a local home where she tucked her five nursing kittens away under a bush for safety. Momma Cat was hungry however and in need of sustenance to feed her growing kittens. As they lay safely under cover, Momma Cat dashed across the street to try to find food for herself, but horrifically, was hit by a car in the process. A direct hit to the head, Momma Cat lay in the road suffering and in what was surely to be unbearable pain. She had babies, however, and this determined mama knew she had to get back to them. She began the horrendous crawl back to her den but alas, couldn't make it more than a few feet before collapsing. The homeowners found her and contacted the local shelter, where the wonderful animal control officer realized that she was a nursing mom and sent the family searching the yard for kittens. Upon being found, the little family unit was taken to the shelter, at which time mama immediately began nursing her kittens despite her immense pain. An x-ray showed that Momma Cat had multiple fractures to her jaw, as well as to her nasal passageway. Her beautiful little face had been nearly crushed and she was in need of immediate help. The wonderful people of Brighthaven Animal Sanctuary in Sebastapol, CA took Momma Cat and her kittens in and provided her the reconstructive surgery she needed to survive. And through it all, this courageous, nurturing mama continued to put her kittens' health first. Without doubt, Momma Cat and her kittens have a story that deserves nothing less than the happiest of endings. Momma Cat is estimated to be 2 years of age and is spayed and current on her vaccines (as are all of her kittens, who are also available for adoption). She would love a quiet, calm adult household where she can continue to blossom. She loves to lay next to you on the sofa and is still a wonderful, bonded mama to her kittens. If she were able to be adopted with one of her kittens, that would just make this the happiest ending there ever was. If you are that special person who's heart wants nothing more than to repay the devotion this loving girl has given her kittens, please consider adopting this sweetheart. Momma Cat is available for adoption through Brighthaven Animal Sanctuary. To find out more about her or to apply for adoption, please visit

About Contra Costa Humane Society

About Our Rescue Group...

Contra Costa Humane Society is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that operates such programs as Adoptions, Kitty Corner, Spay/Neuter Assistance, and AniMeals. We are not affiliated with any other rescue organization, humane society or spca.

Our mission is to empower our community to improve the quality of life for animals and decrease euthanasia rates. Through our programs and services, we connect with individuals and private and public organizations to adopt pets, reduce the number of unwanted animals, and educate the public to foster compassion, responsibility and respect towards animals.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Our business office and Kitty Corner are located at 171 Mayhew Way, Suite 101 in Pleasant Hill, CA 94523.

Kitty Corner houses adult, senior, and special-needs cats (sometimes teenage kittens). Kitty Corner is open for adoptions on Saturday, Sunday & Monday from 12-3pm or during the week (preferably by appointment to make sure someone's available to show you the cats).

All of our dogs, puppies and kittens are located off-site in foster homes and can be met by appointment once adoption applications have been received and approved.

Our Adoption Process...

CCHS has animals available for adoption through a number of different avenues. Many of our kittens and all dogs are cared for in loving foster homes until they are adopted. Teenage, adult, senior and special-needs cats reside at Kitty Corner, an on-site, private cat shelter where cats are allowed to free-roam at all times, lounge in sunny windows and on comfy cat towers, and play to their heart's galore. Similarly, we also have animals available for adoption through our Re-Homing Assistance Program, where we help to advertise animals that caregivers are no longer able to keep.

If you are interested in meeting any of the animals listed on our website, please complete an adoption application unless otherwise noted!
