Oh hai! I'm a little shy, do you mind letting me have a good sniff of your hand so we can get properly introduced? Once I get to know you, I'm very cuddly and want to be close. I'm working on coming out of my shell. I have met some feline friends while awaiting adoption, so I've got some social skills down if you have a resident cat. I would do best in a low-key or quieter home with older kids while I get adjusted. What do you think? Will you give a shy girl a chance to shine?

About Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA

About Our Shelter...

The mission of the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA is to promote respect, compassion, education, and advocacy resulting in a humane and sustainable environment for all animals.

We are proud to provide a humane education program to teach kids and adults of all ages about the plight of homeless pets, animal safety, and the best ways to ensure a long healthy relationship with animals in the home and out. More here: rhspca.org/humane.html

We have a progressive volunteer program to socialize pets onsite. Check out information about that here: rhspca.org/volunteer.html

We are active on the civic level to promote legislation that supports our mission. We are proud to have been the engine behind changes to Virginia law so that it now requires outdoor pets to have adequate shelter, and we continue to uphold accountability for the well-being of companion animals and wildlife alike.

As an open admission animal shelter, we accept any pet who comes through our doors regardless of breed, temperament, color, size, health, age, adoptability, or their previous owner’s or finder’s ability to pay for the duration of their stay with us. We do not require an appointment, surrender fee, nor a pre-surrender behavioral assessment. While not every pet we receive is healthy or temperamentally sound, we work with foster homes, limited admission “no kill” rescues, breed-specific rescues, and knowledgeable volunteers and adopters to ensure that as many pets as possible find a home. See our website rhspca.org for more information about us, and to see our list of available pets updated in real-time.

Our Adoption Process...

Adoption applicants must complete a screening form as the first step towards acquiring a pet. Your application will be verified by staff who will explain the next step in your adoption process. All adoption criteria must be met before the adoption is approved. Once approved, you are under no obligation to complete the adoption if you change your mind.

All dogs and cats are required to be spayed or neutered. The first step to solving the pet overpopulation problem is to prevent contributing to it. The deposit you pay at the time of the adoption goes towards that surgery wherever you choose to establish a relationship with a veterinarian.

Pets are placed in the best possible home if there is more than one application pending. We cannot place a hold or accept a deposit on a pet. Adopters may only adopt 2 pets within a 30 day period.

We can and do adopt to out-of-area homes given that the pet is spayed or neutered before crossing county lines per Virginia state law and the applicant has physically interacted with the pet. We will not ship a pet.

How to Find a Good Match:
Please take your time and consider your reasons for adopting. We have trained staff who can give you information on positive training, breed characteristics, temperament, activity level, and behavior. Please ask for assistance at the front desk, we’re more than happy to help you find a good match! If you are interested in a specific pet, note their name or intake number and inquire at (540)434-5270.
