Nikky is a 6-year-old, 48 pound Australian Shepherd/Sheltie mix. She loves people and passed her temperament evaluation with flying colors. As we get to know Nikky we are finding that she is a high energy dog who would do best with a family her can give her plenty of exercise. She would thrive going running, hiking, or doing agility. She is extremely intelligent, but definitely needs an experienced guardian who can help her reach her full potential with training and positive reinforcement. She does have some strong herding dog instincts - she is reactive when on leash to fast moving objects (skateboards, bikes, cars), people, and other dogs. Because of this we also think she would do better in a home without cats. She would do best being walked with a gentle leader or other similar training tool. She does bond quickly with her person. She's going to be a 'velcro' dog when she finds her person!Nikky definitely lived with someone before, as she already knows how to sit and follow basic commands. She has lots of energy and is incredibly clever, so she'll be perfect for someone who wants to invest time in her training. She is good with dogs of all sizes which she is off leash. She would probably do best with a single person or an active couple. Because of her energy level and sensitive personality, she would likely do best in a home without children. Nikky came to us from Monterey County Animal Services after being picked up as a stray.
