Spencer is a very playful fellow, probably mostly Terrier mix with some love bug mixed in. He is still an adolescent, needing work on his manners while playing with people (hold back those teeth!), jumping on people, and seriously guarding his special areas and possessions (toys, chews). All the rest is just fun and fur.

Because Spencer is unwilling to share space or valuable items in that space with strangers and other dogs, he should not be around children under sixteen. Some dogs consider children as sibling rivals. Younger kids may not have the self control yet to work with him on these behaviors, nor the ability to read his body language before he takes them on. No one was harmed in this test, but his intentions were very clear. We don't know if he will be worse in a permanent home environment or relax once he feels secure there.

The same is true with other dogs. Managing two dogs in a home where Spencer can become possessive in different areas is pretty much impossible. Needless to say, dog parks are not the right place for him to be, as you cannot control what is going on with other dogs and other people. Some people come with good treats, prepared to hand them out to all the dogs!

We were surprised at his behavior with a stranger, as he was never possessive with his precious objects or space with his assessment team. Only a new person, and a dog he had met before.

Spencer needs a home where there are few visitors. With necessary visitors to the home, he should be in a crate (after crate training) and/or in a room that no one other than the family will access.

If you are looking for a loving fun dog who is super nice to hang out with, and can deal well with super management, this guy is terrific. He will be smart in Small Dog Classes and will star in Scenting. Giving him mental stimulation along with plenty of exercise might help him find other ways of relating to the world. Think about it, Spencer is super cute and loving.
