We just received a heartbreaking phone call. A Good Samaritan was driving on the Major Deegan highway last night in the Bronx, late at night, in the pouring rai ... n, and high winds, he spotted a orange dog out of the corner of his eye, about to dart onto the highway. He stopped his car across 2 lanes and stood in the 3rd lane blocking traffic so this dog wouldn't be hit and killed. He managed to get the dog into his car. Shaking freezing, and wet the dog looked starved and was bleeding from his head and neck.
We got the call this morning, as the man couldn't keep the dog, as he has 2 dogs at home in a 1 bedroom apartment. The dog who we have named Deegan, is now at our vet partner, having x-rays and assessing his head injuries. He has bite wounds all over his head and neck, he may have been a bait dog, thrown out onto a highway to die after being chomped on by fighting dogs. We are absolutely devastated for him. He is so sweet and gentle. He ate a meal and rested comfortably last night in the finders home, next to a heater.
Please consider making a donation to help us with Deegan's medical costs. Go to www.nycsecondchancerescue.org/donate
We have alerted NYPD of Deegan, and we hope someone saw the car who threw him out and reported it.
