Exam: Never pick up a mouse by the tip of its tail. Gently hold the base of the tail and scoop it into your hands. Daily handling is required to maintain sociability and confidence. Recommend finding a vet that specializes in small animals for routine care and emergencies.

Temperament: Mice are very active and curious. They can make wonderful little pets that are fun to watch and care for. Always supervise children and pets, mice are very fast and can jump out of your hands.

Diet: High quality mouse pellet/seed mix, small amounts of greens or carrots and fresh water from a sipping bottle.

Habitat: Recommend a glass aquarium with a ventilated cover. Provide a thick layer of bedding for nesting and digging. Never use cedar shavings, they can cause respiratory problems. Mice love to play so provide opportunities for climbing, tunneling and hiding. Be sure your mouse has a hut to hide in. Mice also like wheels, make sure the wheel is solid so their tail and feet don't get stuck.

Mouth/teeth: Mice love to chew! Please provide plenty of safe chewables such as hardwood blocks and cardboard tubes.

Additional info: Please keep in mind that mice can live up to 3 years, be sure you have the time, patience, and love to make a lifetime commitment to your pet.

About Our Shelter...

Mission and Goals

Our Mission: To end companion animal homelessness, to provide the highest quality service and compassion to the animals entrusted to our care, and to be a leader in promoting humane values.

Our Top Goal: Since January 2010, MHS has found homes for 100% of the healthy dogs and cats in our care. Upon reaching that goal, MHS set forth on a new primary goal: guaranteed placement of all healthy and treatable animals. As of Fall 2014, we have placed 100% of the treatable dogs in our care and are now focused on reaching 100% placement of treatable cats.
