Howdy!  I’m Olivia and I am a Texan through and through!  Aye Chihuahua, it’s cold here in Minnesota!!  I got out of the transport van and there was all this cold white stuff on the ground and they wanted me to run around in it!!!  AYE!!!  Brrrrrrrrrrr.  I am learning to appreciate my sweaters and coats!

I am slowly finding my way in my foster home.  I am a bit scared of my new surroundings- but, it is way better than living the ole’ stray dog life that I was living.  Foster mama says she’ll give me lots of time and patience as I’ve been through a lot.  I will tell you though- I am already loving that foster mama- but I’m not quite ready to show her all the way.  When she comes home after being gone for a little bit, I run to greet her and give her a big excited smile and wag, but then I run away really quick before she can pet me.  One of these days though, I’m gonna let her……

I love to hang out with the other foster dogs in my house, I feel really comfortable with them, and I trust them a lot.  We all cuddle and just relax together.  They all LOVE foster mama and let her kiss and pet them- it looks SO tempting.  They try to tell me that it’s alright, and that I can do it.  I’m getting closer and closer.

I am so excited about my breakfast and dinner every day!  It comes to me!  I don’t have to beg and scrounge around for it anymore!  I love to eat my meals, and am right now doing that in my crate.  Sometimes, with the other dogs I get distracted and want to see what they’re eating, then I leave my food and someone chomps it down.  So, foster mama has me eat in my crate until I get my feet under me a bit.

I am just a small little gal, but I’ve managed to survive 3 years on the cruel Houston streets.  I WILL get over my fear and learn to trust humans again.  It’ll just take a little time, love and patience.  Does that sound like something you’d be willing to give?

About Ruff Start Rescue

About Our Rescue Group...

Who We Are & How We Do It

We are a small, but mighty, Non Profit 501c3 Rescue. We are a No-Kill dog and cat rescue organization in Central Minnesota. Our rescue is composed solely of volunteers who love animals. We rescue stray, neglected, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats and work very hard to place them in new loving homes.

This group is comprised ENTIRELY of volunteers who work full-time doing something that pays the mortgage. We do the rescue stuff (which is our true passion) after work and on the weekends. So if your phone calls or emails are not answered by a live person right away, it’s probably because we are at work and will call you as soon as we can!

By Choice

We do not have a shelter. We are of the belief that a home environment is far more desirable than a shelter or kennel. So, we rely exclusively on homes like yours in which to place our pets until they find their forever home!

We work exclusively with a foster-care program where our pet lives with you, and we pay for or provide everything. A home environment is always the most desirable and with the endless supply of animals needing homes, we just never have enough lined up. Sometimes the foster lasts a week, sometimes several months. A dog or cat will do far better adjusting when they are sitting by your chair or next to you while you are on the computer than stashed in a noisy kennel somewhere surrounded by sick and barking dogs.

We Can't Take Every Surrendered Pet
Because we don’t have a shelter, we can only take a new animal IF we have a vacant foster home for the pet to live while we seek a new forever home for him. OR, if you agree to hang onto the pet while we help them find a new home. Sadly, we are not able to assist every animal that crosses our path. There are just too many dogs & cats out there who need help. But, we DO have an extensive list of people looking for specific dogs and cats - so if you can hang onto your pet for a little longer, we might be able to assist you in placing them. No promises, but we promise to do our very best to help you find your pet their new forever home!

Come Meet Our Pets...

All of our animals are in foster homes. If you would like to meet a foster animal, please fill out an application on our website:! We also have our animals available at adoption events at local Petsmarts! (Monticello, Maple Grove, and Coon Rapids).

Our Adoption Process...

The adoption process we go through is to have the potential adopter fill out an application on our website: There is then a background check done on the potentional adopter and if they pass the background check and home visits we set up a home visit! If the home visit passes, the adopter can then adopt the animal they're looking at after meeting them.

There is an adoption fee. This fee depends on the vetting that the animal has already needed. If the animal is too young and has not yet been spayed or neutered, you are required to sign a contract and agree to have them spayed or neutered.
Adoption fees range from $200 - $300
