What is a Mischievous Mutt???

The Mischievous Mutt program is HSU''s initiative to successfully place dogs with some behavioral challenges. This program allows us to place these dogs for adoption although they may require a little extra training & patience to help them become the best canine companions they can be. They are not bad dogs but need a special type of family to ensure they will thrive in their new home.

What makes this dog a Mischievous Mutt?

This loving, loyal boy is Ty. Unfortunately, this guy has a very rough year. Ty''s original owner gave him to someone who didn''t have time for him. Over the last year, Ty spent most of his time in a crate in a bedroom, with very little exercise or human contact. Ty is going to need a very special family that understands his unique situation & is willing to give Ty time to learn the ropes of becoming a part of a family again. It will take time & consistency for Ty to learn how to be a dog again. Because of all the instability in his life so far, Ty has had very little that felt like it was `his`. As a result, he is a somewhat inclined to guard his food from others. Resource guarding is typically a very easy behavior to correct & we are happy to explain how it is best done. It will also help to build a bond with Ty, so he doesn''t feel like he has to be greedy with his food & bones. Ty is just waiting for a loving family who will be patient with him, provide some stability & set him up to succeed.

What is recommended to make this adoption successful?

Formal training is strongly recommended. There are many trainers to choose from. We recommend doing your homework to find a trainer who uses science-based positive training methods & has previous experience training dogs with similar behaviors as the dog you''re adopting. We work closely with a certified animal trainer & highly recommend her services. Any animal adopted from HSU will receive a 25% discount on any services offered. Go to for more info!

Ample mental stimulation (training) & exercise daily are a must. Positive training will help to build his overall confidence level & it''s a great way to bond too!

ALL Mischievous Mutt adoptions are finalized by our behavior department. This is done to help you & Ty succeed. If a behavior staff member is not available, the adoptions staff can assist you in making an appointment. (This is typically the case on Sundays.)

About The Humane Society of Utah

Our Adoption Process...

The Humane Society encourages adoption of its animals by offering a complete package for a single low
price, which includes the animal's spay or neuter surgery, first vaccinations, a complete physical examination by an independent veterinarian, and a leash
for dogs or a carrier for cats. The Society also does its best to make sure that its animals are adopted only to
responsible, caring homes. All potential adopters are required to fill out a preliminary questionnaire and undergo counseling with a shelter employee before adoptions are approved.
