Facts about RJ

  • Breed: Bulldog/American Bulldog Mix
  • Color: White - With Black
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Med. 26-60 lbs (12-27 kg)
  • Sex: Male
RJ (M), 3 yrs old, Arrival date: December 2014, Adoption fee $25 (sponsored)

RJ spends 22 hours a day inside a run looking out at the world and waiting for the 2 hours of freedom in the play yards if weather is good. This has been his world for 2 1/2 years.

RJ is a charismatic speckled ear boy who loves, loves, loves people. He does NOT like cats. Though he has had some dog friends, there have been others which he openly disliked and we have great hopes that when he is out of the shelter environment, that he will again feel relaxed enough to have dog friends. However we will not adopt him into a home with dogs. RJ loves to give kisses and to take long walks. He is a smallish medium sized boy. RJ had the good fortune to be pulled from Animal Control before being put on the euthanasia list in Dec 2014 .

Adoption of all dogs/cats requires an approval process to ensure that they are going into a home appropriate for their needs and that will keep them safe. Each is loved and nurtured by our staff and volunteers during their stay with us and each is placed with same due diligence that they would be given if they were our own furry family members.

The approval process can take from 1 to 3 days. That process is initiated with the online (or in office) submission of the application form. Adoption policies, application procedures and the online application forms are at the shelter website: http://smithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals. All approved adopters must accompany their new family member on the journey home. We do not ship nor transport.

Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter which provides quality care, spay/neuter, all vaccines, deworming, vet exam, standard disease testing and monthly heart worm prevention treatment. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished with others accepted from Animal Control. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open. Adoption hours are Tues-Sat 10-4 and Sun 1-4. Contact or visit CSHS, 4823 Helen Hwy. 75N, Sautee, GA 30571, smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net. 706-865-4135. About Charles Smithgall Humane Society

About Our Shelter...

Charles Smithgall Humane Society (est 1994) is a small no-kill shelter which utilizes our adoption center, social media and offsite events to seek safe and appropriate homes for our residents. Our mission is to provide safe sanctuary and all standard preventive care procedures and veterinary services to the dogs and cats of our local communities Intakes are primarily owner relinquishments with some animals accepted from animal control when space is available. All potential adopters must be evaluated through our approval process. We are funded 100% by donations and fundraising events. With the exception of 2 kennel managers, our operations are totally managed with volunteers. We are always in need of donations and volunteers. We appreciate the sharing of our pets on social media as most of our adoptions have resulted through the resources of the internet.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Our Adoption Center is located at 4823 Helen Hwy (75N), Sautee GA 30571. We are 4 miles south of the alpine town of Helen in the NE GA mountains. We are closed on Mondays. Operating hours are Tue-Sat 10-4 and Sun 1-4.

Our Adoption Process...

Our adoption process begins with the submission of an application which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The application is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated either before or after a visit to the shelter to visit our residents. The application for dogs is located on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271213192922944/?type=3&theater . For cat application, go to: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271223856255211/?type=3&theater . The forms will be automated for online submission through a new website currently under construction with an anticipated launch date of no later than Nov 2016. Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to "first come, first served" in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter(s) is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The application should be downloaded before printing. The completed form can be returned through Facebook Messages, emailing to: smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 3 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. Standard fees for dogs are $100 and for cats $85. Some fees are subsidized in various amounts as low as $25 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for dogs and $20 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for cats . All of our animals are spay/neutered, have age appropriate vaccines and are free of internal parasites. Dogs are tested for heart worms and put on monthly prevention. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV.
