Poor Poseidon, who was abandoned outside the shelter, left in a carrier by the door in mid-November, has chronic kidney disease. Whether he has one year to live, or five, we can't know. What we do know is that his condition and health are improved with a special diet and subcutaneous fluids, which are administered twice per week at the shelter. And we also know that his quality of life, however long or short it may be, will be greatly improved if he can receive care in the comfort of a real home. So we are seeking a very special person or family to provide hospice care for this great, noble cat.
Poseidon is not a highly active cat, preferring to lounge and nap when he's not being cuddled by his volunteer friends. He is very fond of a nice warm lap. He is an equal-opportunity lover — he tested well with dogs, is very kind to his fellow shelter cats, and is very friendly with every human he meets, young and old alike, volunteers and first-time visitors alike.
Poseidon is also an extremely agreeable cat, very cooperative with his treatments, and actually seems grateful for the attention his Special Care Volunteer Martha gives him when it's time for his fluids. He has already learned that the bed she puts out for him will be heated, and that he will receive a few treats, so when she sets up for his fluids, he is right there, ready to hop in the bed with no quarrel. In fact, when he's done, he's not in any hurry to leave his toasty bed or all of the nice petting he receives during these sessions.
Every visitor to the cat room, as well as his volunteers, have fallen for him, because he is such a dignified creature. Unfortunately, none have had the means or home environment to take on a cat who will need to have his food monitored and receive the fluids. It's not that it's a time-consuming task — it takes no more than 15 minutes per session to give him the fluids, which allow him to consume less water orally, which in turn eases the stress put on his kidneys.
We have estimated the cost of his food and fluids, including the needles, to be less than $2 per day, and that assumes his food intake might increase once he's in the comfort of a home and is a little more active. Other than his kidney disease, he does not appear to have any other health issues. He is estimated to be 7 to 10 years of age. He is box-trained, neutered, current on vaccinations, and tested negative for FIV and feline leukemia.
