Let me introduce myself. My name is Maia.
You might remember a line from a movie starring Jack Nicholson. It goes something like, you can’t handle the truth. Well I think you can handle the truth about me, and you definitely need to know the truth.
My background is that I was in a puppy mill. All I knew were the other dogs I was kenneled with, and I had very little human contact. But then BREW came along and took me in.
I thought that we had found a new home for myself. The family thought they could co-star in my life, but they were unprepared for what it will take. I was also the only dog and felt alone and had no one to be my buddy. So unfortunately I came back to BREW.
My current foster daddy says he has thrown out the old script and started a new one that he promises will have a very happy ending.
Foster daddy says that there ABSOLUTELY has to be another dog in my new home. This will give me someone to show me the ropes and help me build my confidence, and someone for me to hang out with when I am nervous.
I like to be around other dogs. I love to follow my foster sisters around the yard. You should see me run out there and bounce around in the snow. I am not so sure what is going on when they let out a big arrrooooooooooo, foster daddy says it is about something called a rabbit or a squirrel. And I love to lay on the comfy couch with them.
It might be best also if there were not any younger kids in the house. All the hustle and bustle of younger, energetic kids would make it hard for me to get comfortable in my new home
My foster family says I have come a long ways in their house, but that I still have a long ways to go. They say even though it will take a very special and dedicated family to help me, that there is one for me. They say the two big words to realize if you take me into your home are PATIENCE and TIME.
I will not go up to my foster family yet. Except in the mornings. You should see me, I am so happy, and my tail wags away, and I will even come up to you to get my butt scratched. But for reasons foster daddy can’t figure out, I only do this in the mornings.
But if I am laying on the couch and you sit down next to me, I will not run off. I will just lay there and enjoy getting my neck rubbed.
I am also learning when you approach me and quietly say my name, to just stand there or sit and let you approach me. I do have to follow you all over the house, and be in the same room to see what you are doing.
I do love treats and meal time. When foster daddy gets the food dishes out I do a little dance. And when the treat jar gets opened, I will come up to you then, hint, hint.
I am crated during the day and keep it clean. Foster daddy says some people say it is not right to crate me because of my background, but I know it is for my safety and well being and I do not have a problem being put in it. And when you come home I sit quietly until you let me out.
They have also been letting me have the run of the house with my foster sisters on shorter days and I have not caused any trouble.
I do not have to be crated at night. I have stopped wanting to sleep under the bed, and now sleep on a recliner in the bedroom. And lately I have even slept on the big bed a few times. Ooooh, it was so comfy.
I have also done very well with my housetraining. I have some obvious signs when I need to go out.
We go for walks whenever the weather cooperates, and foster daddy says I do very well. We are also working on car rides. Right now I am pretty nervous being in the car and will sit on the floor, but hopefully that will get better.
Foster daddy says if you are interested in giving me a forever home and working with me to help my star shine bright, to not let any of this scare you away.
He says we have to be very honest to find the right home for me.
But he also says that we have lots and lots of information and advice to help you work with me. My foster family says they can see a very happy and wonderful girl in me, but it will just take some time and patience while I allow my shell to fall away.
