My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

EST DOB: 9/23/15

Jewel is spayed, microchipped, house trained, and crate trained. She can sit, lie down, wait, stay/release, touch, leave it, and look at me at a beginner to intermediate level. She is good with regular check-ins with me without queue or prompting. She does not loose leash walk outside the home yet but does in the home and yard and is good in a Halti on short walks. She loves to go out in public so we take her to the pet stores regularly. She is happiest when hanging her head out the window of your car when driving and you can see her with her lips flapping and tongue wagging in the wind. Jewel gets along great with other dogs and has very good play manners and we take her to the dog parks often. Jewel is great with big dogs and little dogs alike and lives with a pit/lab mix today. I take her to doggy day care once or twice a week and she always comes back with a great report card. She is well socialized with other people and is good around kids. Jewel is very good about letting us know when there are people coming to the house and we are working on “Hush” after an alert bark. Jewel loves to have her rear legs scratched much more than a typical belly rub. Jewel is great being physically handled and will let you check teeth, eyes, feet, tail, and touch her anywhere. She exhibits no signs of food aggression and when we board her she shares a kennel with Mason without issue.

Jewel is highly food motivated and very easy to train. She is also a smart dog and can train you if you let her. Jewel loves to play with squeaky balls. She will fetch with you but she doesn’t always want to give them balls back to you and would prefer to walk with them in her mouth and chew them. She also loves Frisbees and squeak toys. She loves to chew bones (highest value) and she will play with pig’s ears, duck feet, and bully sticks before settling down to contently chew them. A frozen Kong will keep her entertained for an hour or more. We can leave her unattended in the house for a couple hours at a time. She is investigative but not destructive and we’ve never had a problem with her chewing anything but her toys, which she knows she can get from her toy box. Jewel loves a good game of tug and rope toys too.

We got Jewel in April when she was just six months old. Her previous family kept her in the backyard almost all the time. She didn’t have any record of shots, nor a significant amount of training, she was not house trained and was very underweight. We started from scratch with a 50lb 6 month old. When they let her inside “she was never allowed to look at their house cat”, if she did look at the cat they would hit her on the nose. We believe this was the start of her anxiety around cats in general. We have been trying to manage her behavior for 6 months now with little success. She can be around the cats just fine as long as they don’t move. Once they move her prey drive kicks in and she is overcome with anxiety. I think in a different household without cats she would be much better off. I am very good about exercising her and making sure she gets a good run in everyday but I cannot remove the cats from my home.
Her high anxiety around the cats has also caused light/shadow reactivity. Most people think the shadow chasing is funny and we’ve done quite a bit of behavioral work on it.
