My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Prancer - male - baby (5-6 months of age) - 17 pounds as of December 6 - Hound or hound mix? - tricolor with speckling

Prancer is the very epitome of a treeing Walker coonhound - only in miniature. He is leggy, lithe, and long-backed, and he earned his name due to his glorious movement style. Prancer streams around his foster home’s fenced yard lifting his front legs in a fashion that is perfectly fluid and very high reaching.

Prancer’s eye contact is open and soft. He loves to be petted and held, and he takes treats gently and gratefully.

Prancer and his brother Comet came to us through Berkeley County Animal Control, to whom they were surrendered due to lack of resources in their former home. While we know only that he and his brother were tied out prior to being surrendered, we also recognize that despite benign neglect they must have been abundantly loved. Prancer is a happy, sensitive dog whose innocence is very touching. He greets other dogs with joy and openness. He is slightly more shy meeting new people than his very outgoing brother, however he is fundamentally a very trusting little guy.

There is a special sweetness and vulnerability to Prancer. He is truly a kind and good dog - and although he has not yet mastered any real voice cues, he is a model of cooperation, and he quickly mastered the routines of his foster home.
As a result he is house trained, and anticipates when to jump in his crate for a treat. He explores the house in a classically hound-ly fashion - led by his nose - but he is not destructive.

We do not know how much larger Prancer will grow, but we expect that he will maintain his delicate, deer-like structure.

Because of his trusting and adventurous nature, and the fact that Prancer is still at the beginning of learning leash walking and voice training, we are requiring a securely fenced yard for him. We are also recommending that he go to a home without very young children (under 8 years of age).

Hedgesville Hounds requires puppy adopters to agree to engage in positive training opportunities for adopted puppies, and can provide recommendations for positive training resources that are not costly for adopters.
