My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Opie is a neutered, housebroken, 7 year old male beagle weighing approximately 30 pounds. He was surrendered to a high kill shelter in South Carolina after his owner became ill and was no longer able to take care of him. The shelter was unable to find a home for Opie (called O.B.) because he tested positive for heartworms. Penny Angels was asked if they could help give Opie a second chance at life and they said YES.

Opie went to a foster home in South Carolina and was checked out by a vet. The vet discovered that Opie didn’t just have a few heartworms… he was full of them, and if he didn’t receive treatment right away, he wasn’t going to live. A treatment plan was set in place and then Opie went back to his foster home where he began the long road to recovery. Opie has been with his foster family for several months and is now ready to make the trip to New Jersey where he will complete his heartworm treatment and look for his forever home.

Opie’s foster mom, Patty G., took wonderful care of him and also learned so much about him during the months that he lived with her: “Opie is a fun-loving boy who never ceases to entertain. He loves to run and play with his furry foster brothers and sisters (especially the 2 year old beagle). He seems so much younger than 7 yrs, especially when watching him wrestle with the female beagle on the bed and seeing the pillows fly off it. Nothing gets in the way of Opie having a good time! He gets along great with all the dogs and did from the first minute he arrived. I do think another playful dog would be great for Opie!

“Opie LOVES people, especially people that are sitting on the sofa. This sweet boy loves to hop right up in your lap and roll over for a belly rub. Just be aware that before long, he will start snoring. When he gets really comfortable, the snoring gets louder so make sure you have some ear plugs handy! I think Opie would do well in a home with older children. He likes to run and jump on people or tug on their shirt sleeve to get some attention OR if they have a treat in their hand. This boy is all about love and food and playing!

“Opie walks on a leash but could definitely use a little work in that department. He has such a strong sense of smell, and the desire to track down that incredible scent and follow the trail outweighs any thoughts of walking on a leash. He runs around in the fenced yard with the other dogs – tail in the air and nose to the ground- until it is time to let loose the beautiful song of a beagle! I definitely think Opie needs a fenced yard because his tracking ability is so fantastic that it just might lead him away otherwise.

“Opie is just an all-around good dog. When I watched “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”, I couldn’t help but laugh because of all the beagles that have lived or passed through my house, Opie is the most like Snoopy. What a delightful soul! Please consider opening your home and heart to Opie! You will be glad you did!”
