My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Welcome Gemma! Gemma is about 46 lbs and was found as a stray with her pups. In fact, she is Heidi’s & Onyx’s mom! She has proven to be such a sweetheart that will soak up all the attention you can give. She is currently living with another dog her size (Miles), a lanky dog a bit taller than her (Jagger) as well as a smaller dog. Gemma seems to absolutely love people and needs a little time to warm up to new dogs, but not much. She’s probably about 1.5 years old and won’t get any larger than she already is. Your guess is a good as ours, but with her coloring and stubbiness, she almost looks like a Corgi/Hound mix! She’s also been labelled a hound and a shepherd mix, so basically she’s whatever you want her to be 😉
If you’re looking for a dog that knows how to snooze, look no further! Gemma is a sleepy head and spends the majority of her time napping. She’s a great buddy for the lazy family who wants to sleep in, or the couch potato who needs to catch up on the 8 seasons of the newest Netflix release. Don’t get me wrong, she can handle a good play session with her canine buddies, but if they weren’t here, she’d be just as happy! Gemma is such an affectionate pup, your heart will just melt when you meet her! Seriously though, she isn’t one of those annoying, needy, in-your-face or give-me-attention-now dogs. She’s a bump on a log who loves her humans!!!
It takes Gemma a minute or two to warm up to new dogs. She does not appreciate nosey or rude dogs and can get a little growly, but as soon as you call her name and tell her what a good girl she is, she starts wagging her tail and forgets she is meeting a new, future friend. Soft introductions are probably best because of this, but after an hour or two she is playing with the new companion. Her space is just important to her and the new 4-legged intruders need to understand that. Because of this, Gemma would not be a good dog park dog. But with as lazy as she is, very little exercise is required, so dog park trips aren’t needed to get her energy out by any means.
Gemma does great with children. Anyone who is willing to pet her, scratch her, or rub her belly is always welcome to do so! When it’s bed time, she is kind of spoiled and sleeps with her humans. She has a tendency to curl up near the pillows and rest her head over Foster Dad’s shoulder. HOW CUTE IS THAT?! So unbelievably heart warming… Since Gemma has been in her foster home, she’s only had one accident. During the day she gets the run of the house and Foster Dad always comes home to an accident free home! She did, however, get a hold of a bag of bones recently when she was left alone, so food needs to be put away and dog food needs to be out of reach :)
If you’re looking for an easy first dog (or second, or third, or fourth…), Gemma is perfect! She has such a mellow demeanor and loves everyone. Now, if you’re a super active family that enjoys hiking and doing lots of energized, outdoorsy activities, you should probably move along to another pup because her stamina is just not that great. So look forward to sleeping in and not letting the dog train you with this gorgeous gal! Apply for Gemma today!
To ensure our dogs are placed in a safe environment, we require a home visit for all adoptions. Because of this, we typically only adopt to homes within 30 minutes of Athens, GA. If you are further away than that and are interested in one of our pups, please still fill out an application and we can discuss your options. Please understand that you would be responsible for all transportation - meeting the dog, picking the dog up to start a trial, returning the dog should he/she not be a good fit, etc. Please visit our website for more info.
