Vinnie is a special needs dog that requires a home with a 5 foot privacy fence (minimum), no kids under the age of 16, and an experienced adopter.

Vinnie is a 2 year old, deaf, and vision impaired harlequin Great Dane. Although if you met him you would never know he was deaf or vision impaired…he is just like any other dog that loves to play with his toys, go for walks, and ride in the car.

His vision is limited to about 10 feet and expected to continually get worse until he is blind. His eyes must be monitored every day for color changes. If they change colors, eye drops must be administered immediately and every 4 hours thereafter to maintain his current limited vision.

Vinnie has a known history of dominance and bullying towards kids as old as 15. For this reason, he is not recommended for homes with kids, grandkids, or kids that visit regularly. Otherwise, he is very loving guy that enjoys snuggling and just being close to his people.

There is not much that can/will contain Vinnie. He does suffer from separation anxiety when he can’t get to you and will cry and/or break through any barrier. He does not do well in a crate but is reliable free in the house. He will knock down and/or walk through baby gates and other barriers to get to his people.

Because of his issues with kids and his tendency to go through barriers, it is required that Vinnie go to a home with a 5 foot (minimum) privacy fence that encloses the entire yard (no places for escape). With his tendency to want to be with his people and the fact that he is deaf and vision impaired, this requirement is meant purely for his safety.

While Vinnie is trained with hand signals and even has his CGC certification, because of his vision he will require touch training in the near future in order to communication with is people. He has been trained using a vibration collar as a means of recall or to gain his attention when he is not looking in your direction. While he is a very smart boy, it is required that he is enrolled in a 6-8 week formal training class in order to help establish boundaries with is new owner. Vinnie can be very bossy and stubborn with both people and dogs. For this reason he will need an experienced adopter that will recognize this behavior, correct it immediately, and continue to stay on top of it.

Vinnie has done well with other dogs but does like to play very rough. He has a good deal of energy for a dog his size so it is recommended that he go to a home with a four legged sibling that he can run and rough house with. He would do best in a home that can either commit to doggy daycare once or twice a week or one that is very active and can take him for the daily walks that he loves.

Vinnie is an amazing boy who is extremely smart and loving. He makes a great companion from whether you are snuggling on the couch watching movies or out on the trails taking a walk. He is happy as long as he is with you!
