My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our sweet and very cute Shelby couldn't be more loving no matter how hard she tried. Shelby is a 2 - 3 year old, 11 lb beautiful.. and so very sweet Shih Tzu/Poodle mix. It's difficult to tell from these awful shelter photos but Shelby is stunning with a cottony silver and beige coat.. and dark, expressive eyes with so much wisdom.

Shelby is just waiting to be the love of someone's life. She has had a challenging time..her family wasn't willing to pay a pet deposit to keep Shelby so dropped her off at a high-kill Kansas shelter where she was slated for euthanasia. But due to the determination of Kansas rescuers, Shelby is now safe and sound…never to be unwanted or homeless again.

But with it all, Shelby doesn't hold a grudge and desires only to be the best companion possible. Since she is young and wanting to please so much, Shelby is a blank slate…open to all possibilities if treated kindly and with respect. Group training classes with her family with a positive reinforcement trainer would serve both Shelby and her people. Together they will learn the skills for Shelby to be an adult dog that is well-behaved in every situation. It also creates strong bonds of love and respect between dog and family.

Shelby may initially be a bit shy when she's in new situations…but with love (hugs and playtime are awesome) and respect (and of course some great treats) Shelby is on her way to her favorite people's lap! She would also love to come along, be it to a dog-friendly workplace, on vacation or socializing..Shelby would love to be there as Best Friend #1.

Shelby's Kansas rescuer (who has fallen in love with this engaging little girl) had the following to say about Shelby:
Shelby is absolutely the perfect little lady (initially shy but that's totally understandable) and the sweetest baby ever! I have been rescuing for a very long time - and I can tell you that Shelby is an incredibly sweet and beautiful baby! We've gone back and forth on keeping her (we've never considered that possibility before-she's that special) but we know that we have to leave that rescue spot open to help save another life.

Shelby is the cutest Shih Tzu mix ever with tons of positive energy and tail wags. She follows us everywhere we go but is not intrusive or needy. Shelby is becoming more secure each day and is the greatest lap-dog and foot warmer. I think Shelby would be happy if there was another smaller and gentle dog in the house as she's very social.. but it's not mandatory for her happiness if she's a true part of the family. Shelby has been such a joy we can barely stand to see her go while wishing her the best life ever.

We envision Shelby in a home that will provide her exercise and stimulation. She wouldn't be happy spending long hours alone…she's far too people-oriented to be happy with that. A retired couple or individual or a person who works from home would be great. Shelby would love the companionship and consistency of those relationships. Being young, she'd also learn that she's loved and always safe…a lesson that results in a happy and confident adult dog.

Shelby is a non-shedding girl and will therefore require a commitment to great nutrition and regular grooming to keep her silver coat healthy, cottony-soft and matt-free.

We've requested that Shelby be spayed prior to her transport to Denver. We're not optimistic that this will occur. If it doesn't, Farfel's is happy to cover all costs for Shelby's spay and microchip if our Denver vet is used.

Shelby will be arriving on transport in Denver on Tuesday 12/20/16.. Applications are currently being accepted and can be found at http://farfelsrescue.com/adoption/.
