My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Lucia (LOO-sha), a beautiful and loving girl about 8 years old and 27 pounds. She is very gentle and loves to go for daily walks and spend time with her foster parents. Lucia has shown excellent house manners. She doesn’t counter surf, doesn’t get into anything or chew on things she shouldn’t. She knows the basic commands of “sit”, “down” and “stay”. She is a quiet beagle and only barks when she sees another dog outside. Lucia sleeps through the night in her doggy bed. She walks nicely on the leash and doesn’t pull or chase after squirrels. Lucia doesn’t jump onto furniture but will join you on the couch, or bed, if invited. When her foster parents are not available she enjoys curling up in her doggy bed, in the sunshine or on a blanket near a furnace vent. Overall, Lucia has been a very easy beagle to care for!

Not much is known about Lucia’s past since she was dropped off at the back door of a Detroit shelter after hours. She was emaciated (21 lbs.) and infested with fleas. She also had swollen callouses and sores on her back ankles; most likely from poor living conditions. Lucia has come a long way in the short time she has been in her foster home. She has gained weight, her skin has healed from the flea bites and her fur is growing back in. Lucia is sleeping in an orthopedic doggy bed and her ankle callouses are
improving every day.

Lucia had a few potty accidents when she first arrived to her foster home but has done well once she established a routine using positive reinforcement. After one week Lucia began going to the back door to go outside to potty. Lucia doesn’t like to be crated and will bark to get out. She has free run of the house when alone and has done well with housetraining; as long as she has an opportunity to go outside a few times during the day. She would do best in a home where someone is home most of the time, or able to come home mid-day, to let her outside.

Lucia is very friendly with the low energy, resident female beagle-dachshund mix. She generally keeps to herself and hasn’t shown interest in playing with her foster sister. When Lucia first arrived to her foster home she did show some mild resource guarding with food and bones; however, this behavior has been improving as Lucia becomes more comfortable with her foster sister and her surroundings. It is recommended to feed Lucia in a different room if there is another dog in the home.

Lucia doesn’t usually play with stuff toys or chew on bones - all she wants to do is hide them in the house or take them outside to bury them under some leaves. However, she does love her wobbling treat dispensing toy; she has mastered how to paw and nose the toy to get all her kibble and treats out!

The ideal home for Lucia would be a quieter home, without young children, since she can be startled by loud noises. Also, a home without high energy dogs would be best since she enjoys the quiet and relaxing kind of life. Lucia would do great as the only dog or with another couch potato dog like herself!

Lucia’s vet said she still needs to gain a few more pounds - her ideal weight should be around 30 lbs. She needs a family that will continue to feed her high quality dog food and take her on daily walks to help increase her strength and muscle mass.
