Dakota is a six year old Australian Shepherd. She spent most of her life with a quiet, childless couple that left the country last summer. She is very affectionate girl and is happy to greet anyone that comes through the door. She is not a guard or watch dog by any means She is probably her happiest when getting a belly rub. She is a big talker - a lot of groaning and sighing to communicate with her people. She is very intelligent and shows receptiveness to training.
Overall, she is a low energy Aussie. She is happy to spend large parts of the day inside sleeping, but loves to go for hikes and walks. She likes to walk on leash but doesn’t not like to jog/run on-leash. We have taken her backpacking and she loved being off leash and stayed with us. We have taken her trail running off leash too - sometimes she liked it, other times she wanted to remain in the car. She likes to play fetch in the yard. Mostly she just loves being with her people. She appears to bond most strongly with adult women.
She is not aggressive with people or other dogs. She will bark at other dogs while on walks or if they pass her house. She is friendly with and loves children, but is not a good fit to live with them. Although she is low energy, she has a strong herding instinct with active children. If they are playing chase or wrestling, she gets stressed and will chase and bark at them.
Dakota is not a work-dog or outside-dog. She has spent most of her life being a pet and living indoors. She is house-trained and sleeps in a crate at night. She is fine left inside the home while people are away. She needs work with table-manners; she begs while people eat - it seems likely that she may have been feed human food by her previous owners.
