My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

1/29/17 Update: Are you searching for a dog who is just about perfect? Marge is your girl!! Marge is loving and affectionate, has nice house manners, loves all creatures including dogs, cats, and humans big and little, rides well in the car, and walks nicely on leash. She has a spunky, fun spirit and trots across her back yard, happily greeting her Foster Mom upon her return from work. Marge eats and sleeps well and has not had one potty accident. Marge’s vet is thrilled with her recovery from surgery on her leg. She is like a new girl. Other than a joint supplement, which is recommended for many senior dogs, Marge requires no medicine as a result of her leg injury early in her life. Her favorite things are hanging out with the visiting grand baby, and spending time with senior resident Lab Lucy. She also loves to accompany her foster mom in the car and enjoys her back yard. Marge is simply an amazing dog! If you like Labbies, or if you are simply searching for a loving, easy dog to join your life, ask for Marge. Her pictures do not show how pretty and sweet she truly is! You can welcome her home in late February.

1/11/17 Foster Update: Lovely Marge has started her heartworm treatment and is relaxing at one of our foster homes, soaking up attention. Her Foster Mom tells us that Marge is “insanely sweet!" She likes all creatures big and small. She likes the family cat and is especially smitten with resident senior dog Lucy, who happens to look much like her! She is also enthralled with the human grandbaby who visits. Marge is “spunky yet calm, is great inside the house, and outside on a leash.” She has a loving, social personality and she will fit in just about anywhere, an easy, gentle girl who is also easy to love. Marge is now putting weight on her leg quite often, which is great progress for a dog who spent years not using her back leg very much. Whoever adopts this sweet girl is going to be so lucky!!

Marge's Story: Marge is one of those special dogs who captures your heart immediately. She is so trusting, sweet and innocent in spite of what must have been a sad and difficult past. We first met Marge in an AL shelter where she was brought as a stray. Marge is a black lab estimated to be 8 years old. She is 60 pounds of happiness and affection, loving all people and craving attention. The part of Marge that makes one’s heart ache is that she has lived with an old injury to her right hind leg for so long, it healed improperly. Poor Marge had learned to walk on the bottom of her leg which was calloused and caused her pain. But this sweetheart of a dog showed a courageous spirit and we knew we had to give her a chance at a pain-free, happy retirement life where she would know love and comfort.

We consulted with an orthopedic specialist and in early December, Marge had surgery to fix her leg. She has a plate in her leg which will remain, and a small plate in her hip which will also remain, where a bone graft was done. Her vets are just thrilled with Marge’s progress. She is beginning to extend her “new” leg down to the floor and is starting to put weight on it. It has been a long road with an extended time in a vet clinic, and we are all so happy that Marge is improving each day.

If you met Marge, you would know in an instant why she deserves her chance at a better life. She is a wonderful Lab! Marge is very affectionate and good with kids, adults, dogs and cats. She is a happy girl who loves car rides and is good on a leash. She is a favorite at the vet clinic, where she has her own room with a therapeutic bed. Already spayed and up-to-date on her vaccinations, Marge must get through heartworm treatment and will then be ready for her forever home. She will be spending time in a foster home as she completes heartworm treatment and continues rehab for her leg, and we expect she will be ready to travel north in mid to late February.

Marge is such a good girl and so loving, we know she will bring happiness and companionship to whoever gives this sweetheart her best years.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
