My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our April is pure Beagle Joy. She is the happiest of dogs, and her infectious joie de vivre and bombastic singing voice will wow Beagle Lovers. "Singing Voice" might be overstating the facts a bit, as April sounds more like Ethel Merman getting sucker-punched, but there is no sweeter music to a Beagle fanatic. Nonetheless, April is not a good choice for apartment dwellers who value neighbor relations.

Just a year and a half old, April has already been dumped twice into the same overcrowded urban Animal Control Shelter, and twice faced the euthanasia list. We were stunned by her bad luck, and when we first saw her picture, we were drawn in by her soulful eyes that could melt even the hardest of hearts. We were thrilled to invite this beautiful girl into our rescue.

Shelter staff gave April rave reviews, and she passed every behavior test with flying colors. She made friends everywhere she went, including with the vet and tech staff. She cooperated beautifully during her vet exam, and earned herself a coveted Green behavior rating. She is full of charm and knows how to work a room.

April has the characteristic Beagle good looks. Her short tri-color coat is easy to maintain and requires minimal grooming. She exudes that "nose to the grindstone" panache that folks love in their scent hounds. Scent hounds are easy to entertain. They get a lot of mental and physical benefit from their daily walks, as they investigate all the fragrances that abound in nature. April is easy to walk on lead, but can become easily distracted so adopters may wish to use a halti lead as a tool to redirect April'a attention to his handler's pace.

April would be a great choice for an active family with older kids, who are all on the same page about training a young adult dog. She could also join an active adult home, if the lifestyle permits time and focus on April. She is not a dog that would do well if left to her own devices, and put outside in a fenced-in yard for extended periods. The more action April gets the better she likes it. She loves other dogs and likes to play. April would thrive in a multi-dog home, with other well behaved dogs. While she can seem puppy-rude in a pack dynamic, we have noticed that other dogs tend to play with her, rather than rebuke her.

April still has some puppy tendencies, and as an adolescent, she is still learning her place in the world. She has responded nicely to basic obedience commands, and is both treat and praise motivated. She has good housemaners for an active youngster, but adopters should be prepared to troubleshoot puppy behaviors, and fine tune her potty routine as she adjusts to a new environment.

April is in excellent health, and at a healthy weight of 21 pounds. She has been recently spayed, and has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). She has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been microchipped and dewormed.
