Truman is (almost) 4 years old, 80lbs, has GSD coloring (black with golden brown markings), and a long, soft, collie coat. He looks like a shorter, stockier GSD with a collie coat and GSD ears that, unless he has been alerted, typically sit with one erect and one comically floppy. He is expressive, intelligent, loyal, and protective of his owners. He knows the basic commands (sit, stay, leave it, and come) and has learned a few fun parlor tricks as well. Truman is completely potty trained and crate trained (he goes into his crate on command and often relaxes there when we are home and has no separation anxiety issues). He does not dig and hasn’t chewed anything we didn’t give him to chew since he was a puppy.

Truman is an active, intelligent, and highly motivated dog with the best characteristics of both of his breeds. He would make a great agility dog and would do well in any of the working dog sports. He loves to play Frisbee, go for long walks, runs, and hikes, play games, and learn new tricks and skills. He is very attuned to his people, and is always looking for ways to please. Truman is a cuddler, and wants to be around people and enjoys being affectionate. He’d also make a great working or farm dog, as he loves herding by nature and loves being outside. He is a great fit for someone looking for an alert and watchful dog.

Truman has issues with reactivity (both on leash, and in the yard/around his fence) with strange dogs and people (to include kids playing close to his fence) in some cases. He has been through two different reactive dog courses, and showed dramatic improvement through the course of both. Due to us being a military family, however, we are not currently able to consistently maintain the stable environment and training which he needs to do well in this area. He will fence fight and needs a lot of space from other dogs when on leash for walks to avoid a reactive outburst. He will need an owner who is aware of his issues and who is willing to account for them (hopefully by continuing to work with him). Through deliberate effort and training, he does improve, especially once he is used to a new area. Of note, despite some aggressive barking outbursts, Truman has never bitten a person or dog.

Truman does do very well with dogs when his family is not around, and does great with our small dog (who was fully grown when we adopted Truman). He has been a great citizen at each of the day cares we have taken him to (he goes to day care play groups twice a week through the work day) and we have had no trouble boarding him when we go out of town. He is very protective of his people, though, so the issue seems to be that he is guarding us. Again, this reactive behavior does not manifest when people come over to our house, for example, but is an issue when out and about the neighborhood. He is very attuned to dog and human emotion and is good at picking up canine social cues.

Truman needs a home where he can receive plenty of mental and physical exercise. He is a tremendously outgoing dog and is a great fit for an owner who wants a dog for sport and activities, but that owner will need to be willing to accommodate and work with him on his reactive tendencies. More than anything, Truman has been a wonderful, attentive, and loving member of our family. We are extremely reluctant to find him a new home.
