Chief's Story...
Chief can take life very seriously but then he smiles and your heart just melts. His silly side really shows when he grabs the soft toys and races around the training yard daring you to try to get them back, grinning all the time. Chief is about four years old and is a good weight at 54lbs. We don’t know much about his history but judging by his manners on the leash – or rather lack thereof – he probably received little or no formal training before arriving at our shelter. He has learned the commands for sit and down and performs them well but generally he is not one to perform without a good reason. Chief has a nice soft mouth and when he focuses he can be calm and engage well with the handlers. Chief does not show well in the kennel and this could be why he is still with us after four months but really he just wants a home that will offer him lots of love, even more soft toys and teach him how much fun it is to go for walks together.
Please call the shelter 516-944-8220 during working hours (Mon. to Fri. 8AM-4:30PM; Sat. 12-4PM) for more information about Chief, the adoption process at the shelter, and to confirm availability. Please go to for more information about and directions to the shelter.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Chief, a Port Washington Hound (Unknown Type) dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Hound (Unknown Type) for sale in Port Washington, or seeking a Hound (Unknown Type) dog from a breeder in Port Washington.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Port Washington already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Port Washington breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Hound (Unknown Type) breeders who help with Hound (Unknown Type) rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Port Washington paves the way for another one to be saved.
