Facts about SAWYER

  • Breed: Husky/Border Collie Mix
  • Color: Black - With White
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Large 61-100 lbs (28-45 kg)
  • Sex: Male
SAWYER was rescued and surrendered to one of our Local Humane Societies in this area along with 19 others. SAWYER was totally shut down. He has lived his entire life - outside in a filthy garage with 19 others (of which I was able to see on video for myself)... All of these Husky mixes were fed by a man throwing a large bag of food on the garage floor and letting them all eat at once. Due to this -SAWYER"S ear was bitten off - never treated by a Vet. So, his right ear is almost missing and badly deformed. It is amazing he did not have a severe infection - but it is healed..
SAWER had to be carried out of the truck he arrived in because he is afraid of a collar - leash or slip lead., and humans. He has been severely neglected - BUT HE MADE IT HERE ! We took him outside to potty and he did walk around our yard and sniff
( good sign) !!
SAWYER is currently in our diffuse room - sound asleep on a couch and LOVES to watch TV. EVERTHING is a new adventure for him that he has never experienced before - and he is curious. He can hear our voices thru a vent and he can hear our other dog bark - so he will get used to sounds and smells. His eyes began to sparkle and not distant (as they were in the back of the transport truck.) Eventually we will lower a curtain away from the glass doors and he will watch all of us pass by - and he will learn that we mean no harm to him.
He is a long way away from understanding that he does not have to be bitten to eat - will be handled with a gentle hand and will be loved. It is hard to teach what REAL LOVE AND CARING is like to a poor guy like SAWYER.
SAWYER is Neutered - Micro-chipped - and has one more Vaccination to be given. So, now we work some magic and show him LOVE AND THAT:
WE CARE ! HIS PAST LIFE IS OVER ! HIS NEW LIFE BEGINS!

About Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, Inc.

About Our Rescue Group...

MISSION:
To provide a safe and healthy environment for elderly, infirmed, terminal animals and to assist animal shelters with over-population of animals in need of care due to their inability to provide it, and un-adoptable animals, by providing a forever home where they can live out their lives in peace and in good health. In some cases, we do have adoptable animals, that we are trying to find good homes for.

VISION:
To wipe out the image and mindset that animals are disposable. To educate people to understand all that's involved in care of the animals and allow them an affordable alternative. To stress the need for affordable health treatment to all involved in the medical care of animals and make it happen!

Our Adoption Process...

Adoption Policy

All applications are carefully screened by our adoption staff. With all of our adoptions, we talk with the potential adopters in detail about the animal in whom they are interested, especially if the animal has special needs.

Once an application is approved, the potential adopter is required to go through a home check. The home check ensures that the dog/cat is going into a safe and comfortable environment and that the adoption is the right fit for the dog/cat and the potential adopter. The home check is done by a Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, Inc. staff member.

The adoption donation varies per animal depending on medical cost incurred by the sanctuary.

Our adoption staff also does a follow-up after each adoption to ensure that the dog/cat is adjusting well to his/her new home and everyone is happy with the new member of the family.

Finally, we make a lifetime commitment to any animal we accept at the sanctuary. If, for any reason, an adopter can no longer care for the animal, we request that the adopter return the animal the Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, Inc.
