My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Welcome Phoenix! Phoenix has been in our program for a couple of months now and will be available for adoption on 1/15/17, once her heartworm treatment is finished. That’s just around the corner! This beautiful hound mix is a unique silver brindle and she is an absolute lover doll. She weighs just under 50lbs and is finally at her ideal weight.
You see, when Phoenix was surrendered to the shelter, she was extremely emaciated; based on her red blood cell count, the vet couldn’t believe that she was even alive, let alone, wagging her tail! She was anemic, dehydrated and heartworm positive. If she survived her condition, she would have risen from the ashes, hence her name Phoenix! With lots of TLC, she did just that. Phoenix finally reached a healthy enough weight to get spayed and start her heartworm treatment. Now, she’s ready to be a dog again! Despite the crappy condition she was in, Phoenix has always been a loving and affectionate pup. She bonds with her humans and loves giving them kisses. Upon first introductions she can be a little shy, but she warms up pretty quick. Once she knows someone, she bonds well with them and loves cuddling and laying on top of whoever will allow her to intrude their personal space ;)
Even though it took some time, Phoenix is officially housebroken! When Foster Mom isn’t home, Phoenix stays in her crate and can keep it clean through the whole day. She’s still working on her crate training but does very well when she is left in a room with other dogs. It’s when she is secluded that she gets anxious. She has never been around cats, but we imagine they may scare her, particularly if they stand their ground. Children, on the other hand, are loved by Phoenix! She’s been around 6-10 year olds and she was very gentle with them, so she would be fine in a family with kids. She is, however, afraid of loud noises, including loud people, so Phoenix would do best in a quieter environment.
It’s too funny to watch her learn the way dogs are supposed to act – she’ll pick up a bone or a toy and prance around with it, like it’s her prized possession. She doesn’t so much chew on them as shows them off to whoever will admire. Self-entertained is a pretty good way to describe this little lady. She absolutely LOVES other dogs and is very playful around them. Structured introductions are not necessary and having a furry friend to help let out her energy would be ideal. Dog parks would be fine since she isn’t picky about her play mates! She isn’t particularly high energy, but she definitely needs regular exercise and stimulation. Whether that be walks, runs, or doggy play dates, she loves them all!
Despite Phoenix’s rough start in life, she has turned out to be such a sweet girl who wants nothing more than to shower her family (humans and canines alike) with affection. Once you see her beautiful coat and experience for yourself how loving she is, you’ll have to adopt her!

To ensure our dogs are placed in a safe environment, we require a home visit for all adoptions. Because of this, we typically only adopt to homes within 30 minutes of Athens, GA. If you are further away than that and are interested in one of our pups, please still fill out an application and we can discuss your options. Please understand that you would be responsible for all transportation - meeting the dog, picking the dog up to start a trial, returning the dog should he/she not be a good fit, etc. Please visit our website for more info.
