My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Lana came to MidWest BREW and couldn't walk. She needed back surgery, and had a 50% chance of learning to walk again. She had been down for a good amount of time before she had surgery so it was difficult for the neurologist to say how she would do. She was very lucky that rescue and all of her sponsors helped give her every chance possible. She was able to do the underwater treadmill as physical therapy once a week for several weeks to help with her recovery, as well as her foster mom doing water therapy at home for her several days a week. When Lana was spayed she developed pneumonia, and a urinary tract infection and was hospitalized for 4 days, it was a big set back for her. She had stopped eating and had a very high fever. When she came home we had a cart on order for her, because it had been well over 6 months that we had been trying to get her to walk again. While we waited for her cart, which was graciously provided by Mangoes Mission, we continued with her daily routines. Her cart arrived and it fit perfectly. Lana had started to stand, but could only support herself for a short period of time and walk a few steps. Our hope with the cart was that it would help take some of the pressure off her legs and help her gain strength. After having the cart for only a short period of time she decided she wanted to walk all the time!! She has been going ever since. She now runs in the yard with the other dogs, will go out and sniff for squirrels. She does have some things she has difficulty with, she has trouble when she positions to potty. She did not have to do this before, because of the harness that was used when we were trying to rehab her. She can not go upstairs alone, but has no issue going down at all, and will jump off anything!! When she tries to go up the stairs she tries to use both front feet at one time, she will try and hurdle multiple stairs at once. We just use her little nubby tail as a handle to help get her up the stairs. She is pretty good about house training, but does have an occasional accident. She has bladder and bowel control, as opposed to some dogs who have had back surgery. She is prone to urinary tract infections when she drags herself around, so we do still crate her at night and when we are gone. She can't hold it for longer than 5-6 hours, but we have gotten used to washing her crate blankets.

As for her personality, Lana is a super, duper sweet little dog. She just needs to get to know someone for a while before she trusts them. She will even go into her kennel to eat and when it is time for us to leave to go somewhere. Like most beagles she will do anything for food. She travels well in the car, in a kennel.

She has also been fostered with multiple dogs, and loves them. She will occasionally go and get one of their toys and try and play. She loves to run in the yard with them now and smell for squirrels. One of her favorite things to do is cuddle on the couch with me. All she really wants is love. She is nervous when she first meets new people, and it does take her some time to trust them.

This is a long description of Lana, and I could go on. She has been with us for a long time and we want to find the perfect home for her, even though she has a small issue.
