Staff and volunteers can't stop raving about our sweet Luanne! She will seriously steal your heart. Luanne is from central Illinois, and she was saved from the pound by a rescue group there, then brought to Heartland to find her forever home. After Luanne was saved from the pound and brought to see a vet it was discovered that she was Heartworm positive. Heartworm is completely curable, but it can be expensive which deters many rescues from saving these otherwise perfectly healthy dogs. Thankfully, Luanne was able to receive treatment and now she is in the phase where she needs low activity until the worms are completely gone (which should be a couple months). Luanne can still be walked (and she loves her walks!) but we can't let her run off leash or do anything that would really raise her heart rate. This isn't too difficult because , at 5 years old, Luanne is pretty chill anyways! She does love to be outside, and she walks so well on a leash, but she really doesn't care where she is as long as she is with a person! Luanne just loves all people, and she thinks she is a lap dog. She is very docile and affectionate. She also loves other dogs! Basically, Luanne is one of the nicest creatures we have ever met. Please come and see for yourself!

About Heartland Animal Shelter

About Our Shelter...

Heartland Animal Shelter is a no-kill humane 501 c 3 organization dedicated to finding homeless pets forever homes while educating the public on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets in order to help with the pet overpopulation problem.

Dr. Herbert Preiser, DVM and founder of Heartland Animal Shelter wanted to make a difference by saving the lives of pets who might otherwise be euthanized because of the over-population of unwanted pets. Dr. Preiser opened Heartland Animal Shelter in October of 2002.

Heartland's vision is to eliminate euthanasia to any adoptable animal. Heartland asks for your support by spreading the word about the importance of why pets should be spayed or neutered in order to prevent overpopulation of cats and dogs. Together we can make a difference!
