My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi, my name is Kai. I'm an adorable little mixed breed that looks like something possibly from the fox terrier or min-pin family. Someone even called me a shepherd mix, but I think I'm too small for that. Whatever I am, I'm awfully cute! I have a medium-length coat that sheds low/moderately. I'm about 1 year old and weigh in at 20 pounds.

I'm quite the little traveler for such a young guy. I first found myself in a shelter in Texas. Then I took a long car ride up here to Illinois so Adopt-A-Pet could find me a home. Then I was adopted and brought to Wisconsin, but it turned out that my family was allergic to me, so now I'm back with Adopt-A-Pet looking for my forever home. I'm friendly and fairly calm overall, but can be a little shy or nervous to new or outside sounds. With a proper introduction, I don't mind other dogs. I'm getting more and more comfortable as I get exposed to new situations and sounds, but it takes me a little while to settle in. I don't mind being in a comfortable crate, and I will sleep through the night.

My ideal home will be with a calm and patient person or family with either no children or older children who will be firm but calm pack leaders for me, not noisy or chaotic, and a family/someone who is not gone for long hours at a time. I much prefer to be around people than to be left alone. I'm already mostly housebroken and I'm sure will be fully in no time flat once I get on a regular schedule and know the routine.

In my short time in my adoptive home I was learning leash walking and the commands 'leave it', 'move', 'sit', 'stay', 'wait', and 'go ahead' (for food). So I've had just the start of training, and I'm going to need someone who will continue with my schooling. I'm smart and love to learn. I love going for walks, and inside I like to play with toys. As long as you make it real clear what's mine for chewing and what's not, I'll leave your 'stuff' alone.

I'm really a delightful little guy once I get to know you. Why not come and meet me and see if we're a match? I'll be waiting for you at Wilmette Pet Center, 625 Green Bay Rd., 7 days a week during normal store hours (847-251-6750 www.wilmettepetcenter.com).

My adoption fee of $325 includes: vet exam, heartworm test, DAPP (distemper combo) vaccination, bordetella vaccination, rabies vaccination, routine deworming, flea/tick preventative, heartworm preventative, microchip and neuter.
