My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

2/11/17 Foster Update: Jesse had a photo shoot today! He is looking more handsome every day, with his coat shining in the sun. Referred to as her “golden teddy bear,” his foster Mom says Jesse is a big love bug whose favorite things are snuggling on his dog bed and being near his peeps. Everything about Jesse is easy and laid back, even his eating habits! He is not a chow hound, but rather eats some of his food and goes back later for more. He is not demanding, but is happy to be nearby watching anything going on. And he doesn’t miss much! Jesse noticed a gate left open when groceries were being brought in, walked straight out the gate for a stroll, and did not come right back when called either! Lesson Learned!

If you would like a low-key, hugable Labbie who will bring a smile to your life, please consider Jesse. He may not be a purebred Golden but he has that big golden heart inside. Please be sure to take a look at Jesse's Video!

1/26/17 Foster Update: Jesse has settled right in with his Southern foster family. You can see from his smile just how happy he is to be there! He will be staying there as he recovers from heartworm treatment and gets ready for his forever home. We have discovered that Jesse gets along well with other dogs and that he has a charming personality that is hard to resist. He is such a good boy!! Jesse must have had a family and lived as an inside dog, as he went right over to his dog bed to give it a try. He is a dainty eater and has very nice house manners. He welcomed his foster dad home from work and loves being close to people. Jesse manages stairs easily and his foster mom says he is like a “golden bear!” You can see how gentle and sweet he looks in this video.

Jesse's Story: Meet Jesse! He is a 9-10 year-old Lab mix who ended up in the AL Mobile County Shelter, perplexed and sad. We were told he must be missing his people, but no one looked for him and so he came to our rescue.

Jesse is the kind of dog that people pass by when looking for a rescue dog to bring home. He is a plain brown dog who does not draw attention to himself. But dogs like Jesse are often the best dogs of all! Looking just a little more closely into Jesse's soft brown eyes, you will easily see that he has a huge heart with lots of love to share, with a personality that reaches out and grabs you. When our volunteer visits, he lights up and when she leaves he whines. He is such a good and gentle boy; a true Southern gentleman!

Jesse is chubby at 73 lbs and can use some regular walks to help him trim down. He gets around just fine and will be a great walking partner! His skin and coat are recovering nicely from an untreated flea allergy and his ears are also recovering from an infection. His ears may need a weekly cleaning, common to many retrievers. Jesse is neutered, micro-chipped, updated on all his vaccinations, and has started his heartworm treatment.

If you are watching for a sweet Labbie companion who appreciates every bit of kindness and attention he is shown, please consider Jesse. He will be ready to travel north in mid-March, just in time for Spring.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
