Facts about Checkers

  • Breed: Pointer/Terrier (Unknown Type, Medium) Mix
  • Color: Black - With White
  • Age: Young
  • Size: Med. 26-60 lbs (12-27 kg)
  • Sex: Male
Checkers is a handsome, young, neutered, energetic male Border Collie-Staffie Cross
(about 2.5 years old) who absolutely loves to chase! He could spend hours fetching balls as he is very play driven - he likes to swim, too!

Here are a few other details about Checkers:
House trained
Great on leash
Very good in the car
Large fenced yard needed
Sweet and affectionate with people
Does not seem particularly prey driven (may be ok with cats)
Sleeps through the night (likes to have his bed in the bedroom)

Checkers is a very smart dog that loves to learn new things although he can be insistent! His foster home has taught him a lot of obedience skills (including wait, look at me, sit, down, come).

A dog-savvy, patient owner. He would be best in an adult-only home where he receives consistent care and attention he bonds quickly to his caregiver with lots of socialization - and would love another dog to pal around with.

This boy has lived in numerous environments Checkers so desperately wants/needs the security of a forever home.

About Dogwood Rescue Society

About Our Rescue Group...

We are a network of volunteers who are passionate about animal welfare and have been quietly rehoming dogs for over 40 years. Our mission is to rehome homeless, unwanted or abused animals after ensuring that they are neutered/spayed and evaluated. We specialize in sporting dog breeds such as Pointers, Retrievers, Vizslas, Weimaraners and Dobermans, but will find a loving home for any breed of dog in need, particularly seniors.
We rely on public donations to continue our work, with our largest expense being veterinary services. Each dog that arrives with us receives a physical exam and spaying or neutering, if required. Many of the dogs we rescue, come to us malnourished or unhealthy because they have been neglected. We help dogs who are abandoned, relinquished, or available due to:

- Cruelty;
- Age or health;
- Neglect;
- Hardship;
- Divorce;
- Moving (where pets are not permitted or cannot make the journey);
- Lifestyle changes (starting a family);
- Death (or illness) of the owner;
- Imminent euthanasia in over-crowded shelters;
- Unwanted pets (e.g. puppies from unplanned litters) released into rural areas.
If you would like to contribute to animal welfare in your community we are always interested in hearing from you! We appreciate any volunteer help for fostering, advertising, fund-raising, transport, etc. If you cannot help out in person, but would still like to contribute to the welfare of these animals that find themselves in dire need, we welcome your assistance through the donation of funds or by sponsoring a particular dog's medical needs.

Come Meet Our Pets...

We do not keep our rescued dogs in a shelter. Our dogs are placed in caring volunteer foster homes (with foster-to-adopt as an option).
