He is Sam! Sam is a happy, healthy dog in the prime of life. He'd love to meet his new family and become a long-term companion. Sam can take a few minutes to warm up to new faces. We know the feeling. But once he knows and trusts you, he truly is man's (or woman's) best friend. We're wondering how his tail is still attached, with all the wagging it does every time he spies his favorite volunteers. After he feels comfortable he loves to come up for some petting. Sam has a medium energy level. He definitely enjoys a good romp now and then, but he also likes to get in plenty of beauty sleep. We think Sam would do best in a home with adults or with older children. He'll definitely benefit from a family who can provide him with both mental and physical stimulation and ongoing training. He promises to make the learning fun for everyone! Sam is a good playmate for most dogs. If you've already got a dog in your home, we'd be happy to introduce them to make sure they would be compatible housemates. But Sam isn't just a good-time Charlie. He's shown himself to be a smart dog and knows all of his basic commands. Often he'll ask you for instructions by waving his paws at you. Sam is in the Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modelled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Sam has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! He is learning skills like sit and down, walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told 'free,' and coming when called. Once Sam successfully completes all the skills on his training plan he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Sam is working hard to become a wonderful pet and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with Sam after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based:
