My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Thank you all for your interest but we are no longer accepting applications for this pet.

Bert is a very young dog who doesn’t seem to have had the luxury of being a beloved pet but is coming along very nicely in his foster home. He was a mess when he came to us but has now had a grooming and I am sure, is feeling much better. We don’t really know his story other than he came to us from a shelter but perhaps someone decided after Christmas that they really didn’t want a puppy after all. Bert is under a year old and currently weighs 13 lbs. He will need regular grooming or to be kept in a short cut.

Here is what his foster family had to say:

Bert is a very fun and energetic young dog. He loves and needs attention when you are home, but he is also very good when left on his own. Bert’s favourite activity is being petted, getting a good belly rub and playing with his bone shape cushion. We were originally told he was a year old, but he looks and acts much younger. He’s pretty small, loves to play a lot, and likes being petted like a baby. Bert’s energy level varies at times during the day, but we should say it’s moderate.

I don’t think he’s shy towards a particular gender or age group, but in general he’s hesitant to get close to people. He would try to hide in the elevator in the beginning when strangers get on. When we took him for grooming, the lady at the spa had a hard time because he’s very afraid of sounds, table and new people. He needs to be exposed to more people and sounds.

I think once he is socialized properly and feels more confident, he will be fine with anyone. He warmed up to us very quickly and I am sure he will do the same with his new family. He’s okay to meet other dogs, but sometimes he growls at them, but he’s pretty gentle with other dogs. Never exposed to cats but he doesn’t appear to have any kind of prey drive and with his size he should be fine with dog-savvy cats.

Bert does not show any signs of separation anxiety. He is very quiet at home and only barks when he hears noises from outside. He is crate trained and he stays in it for about six hours at a time when there is no one home. He is normally relaxed and just lies down/sleeps in the crate. Other than a few accidents in the first few days, Bert appears to be completely house trained and only uses the bathroom outside. He is learning some basic commands such as come, sit and off, most of the time. He is okay with the leash but tugs sometimes when he wants to follow people or he really has pee. Otherwise he is pretty pleasant on walks. He has never tried to run away or bolt out the door. He just wants to be with his people. Bert is still a puppy and will get into things he finds on the floor and also eats things that fall of the table.

We sense that he hasn’t been exposed much to people, dogs or even regular surroundings such as home, car, sounds and toys. This is why he is timid around strangers and just wants to stick close to the people he trusts. He will need someone that is willing to continue with his training and socialization in a positive and patient way as he is a really gentle little soul. He is pretty kind and I feel he would be good with kids that are 12 and up that can understand that he needs a bit of time to watch and get to know you.

Bert is not super energetic and he doesn’t play rough with people or need lots of toys. I think any situation from apartment to house would be good for Bert. He is not loud and he does not need constant care and supervision. He is also good at being left alone at home and does not seem to be anxious. I think he is slowly learning to trust and given time will make a wonderful companion.
