My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mickey’s adoption fee is $350.

Our darling little Mickey is an easy going dog with some physical challenges and a unique quirky character. He’s a Maltese mix, approximately 3 years of age and he weighs about 4.5kg. He’s neutered, up to date on vaccines and has had a dental to clean and scale his teeth and remove a remaining baby tooth.

Mickey has an unusual gait and movement of his legs, and exhibited general weakness of his limbs during his veterinary assessment. His medical records indicate that he has had these issues since puppy hood. Our vet feels it may be either a neurological problem or a congenital weakness in the legs. He also has cataracts in both eyes but it is felt that they are not affecting his vision at this time. Regardless of his physical challenges, Mickey manages to get around quite well, though he does need to be carried up and down stairs or picked up to get on furniture etc.

Mickey is very uncomfortable being groomed or having his rear legs/paws touched or groomed – he seems almost hyper-sensitive to touch. His coat mats easily, and will need to be groomed by an experienced groomer, or sedated for grooming.

He loves to be with you and will cuddle when you pick him up and hold him, but after a while will want his own space a bit farther from you. He’s not very active but has his moments when he wants to play. He will eagerly go outside each time you ask him - even in the cold. He really likes to go for walks but doesn’t always do “potty”, and would not be considered fully house trained, even though he gets frequent outings during the day. He doesn’t like when you pull on the leash and will pull back, or sometimes stop, and may whimper and lift a paw when walking on sidewalk, possibly from road salt getting in his very sensitive paws.

He gets very excited when it’s bedtime and when you put him on the bed he prances around on it. We have a few toys on the bed that he plays with at bedtime. We were told he did not have much interest in toys but after noticing him whipping his mini blanket around, we got him some toys, and he loves them all. He will infrequently play on his own, but prefers playing when you instigate it and then is happy to play with you.

Mickey LOVES watching TV – he’s almost a TV addict (you know, like that friend whose eyes will always be on the TV even when you’re talking to them – lol!). Sometimes even when he’s playing, he stops to look at the TV screen. He started reacting to everything on the tv and barking quite a bit, but we worked on this with him and now he mostly just watches and growls sometimes. He still barks the odd time, especially if dogs are on – it’s quite funny to watch this TV addiction quirk of his.

He barks the odd time if hearing someone come in unexpectedly, but doesn’t tend to bark at new people coming into the house or at the doorbell.

Mickey is fine with other dogs encountered on walks, and would probably be fine with a gentle canine companion – we’re not sure how he would be with cats. He’d be best suited to a home without younger children.

If you feel that this endearing pup with his unique physical traits and loveable personality would be a good match for your home and lifestyle, please contact us for additional information and an adoption application form.
