My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In June of 2016 we were contacted about a dog family with 3 puppies that needed immediate help in Southeastern Missouri. The message read "Do you know anyone that can help this mom, dad and 3 babies, and the mom & dad have been shot?" Well, from that moment, we knew the family had to be saved. They were wandering aimlessly on a busy highway and the parents were desperately trying to protect their pups and find refuge for them. The family was gathered to a safe place and taken to the vet office for evaluation and possible emergency surgery.

Mama Bear is a very sweet and calm 2 year old that has been shot, and likely this wasn't the first time. She is blind in one eye. She has a bullet remaining in her back side and healed wounds from additional gunshots. She was found with her 3 puppies, thankfully they have no outward signs of injuries. Mama Bear & Papa Bear protected their babies from this evil person by taking the bullets.

Sadly, Mama Bear was disagnosed with Histoplasmosis, the same thing that ultimately took the life of our sweet Papa Bear. The fungus that causes it is found in the soil most prevalent along the Mississippi River valley, precisely where they were found. Papa Bear protected his family & got them safe, but in dying, he saved Mama Bear's life again. Had he not gotten so ill, we never would have known she was suffering from this infection. It is extremely rare so it isn't something we likely would have picked up on. This is the sweetest, most tragic, most heartbreaking story. Love in the truest form. The ultimate sacrifice made by Papa Bear. Mama Bear is a beautiful Lab/Hound/Pointer mix (best guess). Whatever breed she is, she is sooo sweet and mellow. Her favorite activity is eating. She loves going for a stroll, is people, kid and cat friendly. Squirrels get her the most worked up (the chase is on!). Her house manners are impeccable. She is hoping to get her girlish pre-pregnancy figure back into shape but not having a whole lot of luck with that one, the food at her foster home is just too yummy. She has taken to city living like a duck to water. Is generally a low maintenance gal.

Mama Bear is on medical hold while she continues treatment for the Histoplasmosis. It is a lengthy process taking several months of expensive antifungal medication and monitoring. She had been treated for heartworm disease as well when she came into Dolly's Legacy and remains on heartworm preventative for life. Please say a prayer for our beautiful girl that she come through her treatment & recovery to live a long & happy life. She deserves it more than any other dog we've ever known.
