UPDATE: When we first met Shimmy, he was shy and a bit unsure about what was happening. Now, after a couple of weeks with his foster mom, he is completely out of his shell and has settled into his foster duty which is keeping track of his foster mom! Shimmy is deaf, but you would not know it unless we told you...or you noticed he was not responding to noises. Think of it! A dog that doesn’t bark at a doorbell, a knock on the door, mowers or blowers! As a matter of fact, Shimmy likes to help his foster mom mow the lawn and sits on her lap on the tractor, happy for the ride. And our little Shimmy does NOT get underfoot. Shimmy is independent - as long as he can see his foster mom, things are good and he is content to sit or lay on the floor and watch. Now if his foster mom sits down, he will be in her lap in a heartbeat. He doesn’t want to be carried, just be with his human! Shimmy is also getting along just great with two canine foster siblings and a visiting pup that belongs to a family member. We want to see this wonderful senior fellow with a family where someone is home most of the time. Because he can’t hear threats, he needs a fenced yard so he is protected from animals he won’t hear coming. We don’t think anyone will mind taking special care of this little man – he is a super companion and so easy to love! If you would like to meet Shimmy, please email Kelly Teasley at kteasley@atlantahumane.org.

About Atlanta Humane Society - Alpharetta

About Our Shelter...

Atlanta Humane Society (AHS) is a 501(c)3 tax exempt nonprofit (IRS Tax ID# 58-0685900) and the oldest private charitable organization in Atlanta, founded in 1873 following a visit to the city by Robert E. Lee. The animal charity was originally chartered to protect women, children, and animals and remained a child protection and animal welfare society for 79 years. AHS, now a widely recognized pet adoption center, clinic, and educational program provider, was originally located on Marietta Street and moved to its location at 981 Howell Mill Road in the 1930s. Atlanta Humane Society's Mansell Road Adoption Facility was opened in December of 2011 in Alpharetta.

It is our mission to prevent neglect, abuse, cruelty and exploitation of animals and to assure that their interests and well-being are fully, effectively and humanely protected by an aware and caring society.

Atlanta Humane Society places approximately 8,000 animals into forever homes each year. AHS is committed to finding homes for all adoptable pets. We do not euthanize adoptable animals, and there are no time limits for the animals once they are in our care. We only humanely euthanize those animals suffering from significant medical issues or that pose behavior concerns. We are proud to be a part of the solution to ending pet homelessness and overpopulation in the Southeast United States.
