My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

Let me introduce you to a wonderful dog named Rook. Rook is a name for a type of Raven and with his deep black coat that shines like a Raven’s it seemed a suitable name. He’s about 18 months old, medium/large size (with a couple extra pounds) and a beautiful mid-length coat. Rook is a lovely natured Border Collie/ Lab mixed boy who is looking for a family to offer him a forever home and the loyalty and companionship he will most certainly offer them.

Rook was found wandering the streets tending to a puppy friend who was claimed, but Rook? He was left. He was unidentified. He was alone. Alone as he may have been for that short while, it didn’t take him long to open up and show us how much personality he has. Rook and I get along very well, we’re both very laid back and somewhat lazy (I guess we could both lose a few pounds). Rook really enjoys his walks, but isn’t a dog that pesters if he doesn’t get a long enough walk on a busy day. Rook needs to get out daily though for a good long walk as he needs to continue to lose weight. We are working on this as he’s such a young dog to be chubby as he is. It’s apparent he wasn’t properly exercised in his previous home. He’s walked 3 times a day 20-30 minutes each. He loves his walks and we love walking Rook. He’s a dream on a leash! No pulling or barking, and if the leash gets tight a quick ‘ah-ah!’ and he comes right back to your side. Rook would be a dog capable of running with you if you wish, he will just need conditioning to build up endurance. He doesn’t like balls or playing tug, but he’ll settle in for a nice belly rub. He enjoys chewing on a Kong or gnawing on an antler. He lays his head on your lap as your stroke his ears, he feels comfortable and at ease.

Rook likes his food, but doesn’t beg or rummage – he’s fed twice a day, with a tablespoon of wet food. He likes peanut butter and cheese, hot dogs and jerky (made for dogs) but isn’t overly motivated for food. He prefers praise and head scratches for rewards. He’s eager to please and he has all the smarts required for training. Rook is a very good boy and knows many obedience skills already. He will make his new family look very good at dog school and he is looking forward to learning new skills.

Rook LOVES other dogs, he loves to play and wrestle and just have friends. He’s a social pup with a huge heart. We are looking for a home for Rook that has another friendly and playful dog. Rook comes to life when he plays with other dogs and you really see his true joy. Rook had eagerly greeted dogs of all sizes and greets nicely and always with an invitation to play. Rook has also met cats and was a true gentleman with them. Rook is also a dog that we feel would be good with children and would make a great family dog. Rook is fine in the car and makes a great travel companion. He is a dog you can take pretty much anywhere and be confident in the fact that he will be well-mannered and comfortable. As long as he is with his beloved people, he is happy!

Rook adores his people and hates to be separated from them. We have found that we have to crate Rook when we leave the home. Rook has a bit of anxiety when it comes to his crate. He pants and drools but he’s getting a lot better, it has just taken time and a secure crate that he can’t escape from. Rook will require a home where someone is home more than not; someone that works from home, is retired, can take a dog to work with them, or people who work opposite shifts and have someone home more than not. He will not enjoy a home where he is left for hours on end every day. Rook is a very sensitive boy; his people leaving him behind is tough for him. So a family where he is with his people most of the day would be the best for our sweet guy. The nice thing about Rook is that he is a very quiet dog and rarely barks, so he isn’t vocal in his crate. Just drooly and intent on escaping the crate if he feels he can.

Rook knows how to sit, lay down, and is working on the stay command (1 minute or so, within visual mark). He also has a lovely “heel” command and will self- correct if the leash goes taut and falls back to your side. He responds well to lots of attention and petting and cuddling. He wants to be around people, he loves meeting new people! If he gets really excited after not seeing you for a while, he’ll put his paws on your knees while you pet his head.

Rook is a dog that is loyal to the bone. We will be sad to see him go, but he’ll always be in our hearts knowing he’s in a forever home, being loved and adored so that we may rescue another.
