My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mason: 4-year-old male black Lab mix 85 lbs

Found wandering the streets of Solano County, unneutered Mason (named by the shelter staff) didn’t take well to the “county dog jail”. He didn’t get along with the other “prisoners” and was a bit obnoxious with and not-so-trusting of “the guards”. After the warden and several guards went to bat for him, Mason was paroled to Lab Rescue… thereby avoiding death row. Three days into his stay at the half-way house he was found with the homeowner’s tasty wallet (per the attached photo) – allegedly pursuing some identity theft. Mason is now looking for his forever cohort in crime. He is currently with a professional career counselor (er, dog trainer) gaining some life skills to navigate life outside the pen.

What Mason’s trainer says: Mason is a mellow dog that enjoys the company of people above all, though he will romp around with familiar dogs. He can get insecure with new dogs, so slow introductions with respectful dogs will be the most fair to him. Mason is food motivated, loves a good cuddle, and definitely prefers his freedom. He is not a fan of the crate, though if the food is good enough he will follow it into one. Left alone with freedom, Mason will find something to chew on - and it might be something that you really love. Mason needs a confident handler that will usher him through situations that he feels insecure in, primarily when unfamiliar dogs approach him strongly. He does not fight or flight, he freezes. He needs a handler that recognizes this and moves him out of uncomfortable situations thoughtfully.

What Mason’s Rescue Rep says: Already microchipped and current on his vaccinations, Mason is now neutered! Crate-training is in progress; sleeps throughout the entire night without a peep. We think handsome Mason may be part-lab/part-newfie. He is one big and long dog. Not a good dog for young children or with another young exuberant dog. He would be fine with another mellow dog in the house. Cats in the house would likely be a non-starter. Mason will require a dog-savvy owner comfortable with handling large dogs. Mason is located in San Pablo.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
