UPDATE: Ollie's coat continues to grow back in. Check out his latest COLLAGE picture as of 04/25/2017! He also is up to 54 pounds. He is now getting baths every other week and soon we will try once a month.

Ollie is a 3-year old male Samoyed (maybe a mix). He is a gentle soul, and has one of the most delightful personalities we have ever encountered. He is being listed as a special needs dog because he has a skin disease known as Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) which requires management of his skin with a routine of supplements and more frequent baths.

Ollie was found running at large and turned into a shelter. Two weeks prior to the dog being found on the streets, the owners had brought him to the shelter to be euthanized, but the shelter refused. This shelter is small and at capacity, so they reached out to our rescue for help. It appeared in pictures that they sent us, that he dog had been shaved. It was hard to really determine his breed type except for a few tufts of white hair and the signature tail over his back.

We had him transported to Denver, and he went directly to a foster home. When we realized Ollie had not been shaved, he was seen by a veterinarian specializing in dermatology who confirmed the diagnosis of SA via a biopsy. It is an auto-immune condition that causes inflammation of the skin and sometimes hair loss. It is a condition that is known to occur in Samoyeds and some other breeds. In addition to hair loss, Ollie was about 15 pounds underweight.

Ollie is currently getting medicated baths every other week, plus supplements of fish oil and vitamins. On the advice of the veterinarian, we will cut the baths back to once a month, and then evaluate. He is now weighs 54 lbs.

Everyone who meets Ollie falls in love with him. He is a super friendly boy, greets any person he encounters with sheer happiness, loves kids, and gets along with other dogs. He has been introduced to cats and seemed fine with them. Ollie knows basic obedience commands and walks well on a leash. He rides comfortably in a crate in the car and is house trained. He is a medium activity dog that loves to go own walks and is tolerant with grooming. He would need a 6' fence and/or proper containment when unsupervised, because he jumped a shorter fence when he was at the shelter.

If Ollie is a boy you would like to consider, please complete the Adoption Application.
