My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

There's nothing quite like puppy energy and silliness...and then they lie quietly on your shoulder breathing their warm baby breath. They're so pure and vulnerable that it's unbearable to think of them in a high-kill shelter.

Flower, at only 6 weeks old and 1.8 lbs (is estimated to be full grown at about 25 lbs), was facing the end of her life before it ever began. It became immediately apparent that Flower has been blind since birth. She was therefore scheduled for immediate euthanasia with a last-minute plea going out to rescuers. This was followed up with another plea...her rescuer so thrilled that Flower was thriving. She was eating well and responding just like any other sweet baby to cuddling and soft voices.

Farfel's has spoken up to save Flower's life and welcome her into our rescue. This baby has every possibility for a great life as a loving family companion. There are great training classes for blind dogs (with great temperaments) to assure that they'll live the full life of any other pup. Flower will be a heart-felt experience for a special adopter. They will choose to spend their time and energies on loving and training a special needs girl. The payback is amazing! There will never be a more bonded and loyal companion than a blind dog that is trained and loved without judgement.

One of our Farfel's adopters that brought a blind dog into their family asked us to pass along a poem written by their 12 year old daughter...

I love you as much as any dog with sight
We took you in, you gave us love and we will never part
Because you're blind with just your eyes, You see us in your heart

This adopter also commented that their blind rescue has taught their daughter profound lessons. She spoke of the compassion that she has gained for the needs of any special being.

Flower is incredibly beautiful...with the silky-soft shine that will emerge as she receives great nutrition. Flower is appropriately playful and inquisitive for her very young age. She appears to be so smart! She's coming out of her newborn shell by the day.. very engaging and cuddly. This is very typical behavior for a Lab mix that has been handled with love.

Since Flower is just a tiny baby, she's a blank slate just waiting for a kind and patient human to show her the way. She has all the potential in the world to be an awesome companion and will form firm bonds with her family (as well as other dogs and humans) and learn positive socialization skills through Puppy Socialization Class followed by positive reinforcement group Obedience Classes. It does take time and commitment...yet pays off a thousand times over when you have a dog that can accompany you in the world with appropriate behavior.

We're open to Flower finding her forever home with active retirees with lots of patience and energy to train and enjoy a special needs puppy. There's also no doubt that Flower will be great with children as well but we would prefer to place her in a home with older kids that can participate in a training regimen geared to a blind dog.

Flower will be up to date on her vetting. We're hoping that she will be spayed when she arrives from Texas... however a very young puppy like Flower is often deemed too young to fix. If this is the case, Farfel's will cover all costs for her to be spayed at our Denver vet to be in line with our commitment to be a part of the solution to pet overpopulation.

This photo of Flower was taken a couple of weeks ago...she is growing and changing so quickly. We'll update with photos of Flower in her foster home as she blossoms just as soon as we receive them..

Flower will be arriving on transport in Boulder in late March. If interested in this exceptional baby who will bring so much to a special family, please fill out an application at http://farfelsrescue.com/adoption/ and submit to farfelsapps@gmail.com or fax to 303-443-7730.
